Wirnan

Wirnan

Wirnan was anxious to return to his quarters for the night. Another days
work put in, and hopefully tonight he could enjoy a nice respite with Kaya.
Things had been going so much better of late. As he entered their rooms, he
looked over and smiled. She seemed hard at work on something that had
clearly caught her attention.

"Good evening, Kaya. How has your day been?" He asked, moving in and
shutting the door behind him.

Even though Wirnan had approved of her drawing (as long as it was not a
public endeavour), Kaya couldn't help but jump whenever she heard him and
she was drawing. It was instinct pummeled into her by her past. Though she
relaxed more quickly than she had the last couple of times, that was for
certain. She managed a small smile for the man. "It was good." She
paused, then asked, "And yours?"

"Busy, but productive. One of the holders came by with a store of his latest
to offer in tithe and two others came seeking assistance with issues they
are having with their cotholds. I think we'll be riding out to a few of them
in the next few sevendays or so." He moved over to the sideboard and poured
himself a refreshing glass of water. As he turned he glanced at the drawing
in her lap. He paused, trying to place what he saw.

"Are those the children we saw playing by the water on our last walk?" He
was curious as to why she had chosen that particular subject.

Kaya's gaze slipped back to her drawing and she ran her thumb over one of
the corners. "This? Yes, it is." They had been so cute, and the memory of
them had remained well enough for her to get a rough drawing out at least.

He'd stepped forward gazing down at the image. It really captured the joy of
that experience. "Children really bring out the best in all of us. Their
youthful innocence and excitement." He felt his heart catch a bit. He
recalled the conversation he'd had with Zathris a few sevendays ago.

"There are many children who could use a good home, who need someone to care
about them," it was his way of gently broaching the subject he had in mind.

"Children are lovely." Kaya agreed. It was a shame she would have none.
Ristin was gone and she just couldn't bear the thought of having anyone
else's child, not even Wirnan's. It took a moment for his last words to
sink in and she glanced up, stiffening. "I...suppose."

He didn't really notice her small reaction. "Have you ever considered
fostering? I mean, we could take in some children who need fostering, if
you'd like." Wirnan, of course, had come to the conclusion awhile ago that
she couldn't have children, though he'd never formally asked her. He didn't
plan to either, not after the way _that_ conversation had gone. He did want
children and if fostering other people's children was the only option
available to him, Wirnan was more than willing to consider the option.

Kaya straightened up and put together her things, replying stiffly, "I think
we should go to dinner." She didn't want to think about having children.
No. It wasn't right, not when she'd be leaving. Not when he wasn't. She
shook her head. "I'm hungry. Hungry enough that I have a headache." Then
she disappeared into the bedroom with the intent of putting away her
supplies.

He frowned. He hadn't known quite what to expect, but her response made him
decide to drop the subject completely. Perhaps they could discuss it some
other time, after she'd thought about it a bit more.
