Characters: Rhosyn, R'yin
Description: Rhosyn helps R'yin when his dragon gets scored.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 12, day 12 of Turn 5
Notes: Mentioned: K'sedel
While Orlaith was nesting with her eggs in the Grounds, Rhosyn was with the other weyrfolk who were getting ready for threadfall. She wished K'sedel a good fall and then went back to make sure the stations were ready for any injuries that might come in. Bracing herself, she stood and prepared, chatting with some of the candidates that were helping.
It was the sudden sideways lurch, followed by a sizzle of Thread followed by the bitter cold that told him something was badly wrong. R'yin and Aerrath came out of /between/ over the Weyrbowl, listing a little to the side.
):It hurts! It hurts.. !:{ the brown was not precisely shrieking, but he
was definitely in pain. He was normally so calm that R'yin was stunned when he tumbled off his dragon's back as they landed, a little awkwardly.
**Aerrath! Calm down! It's just a minor scoring.. ** He said without
thinking, or knowing, to be honest, his own dragonhealing experience coming to the front. Calm, calm. Must keep calm.
But this time it was _his_ dragon!
Calm, calm.
"Shards! How did it miss me and hit only you, love?" He said aloud, moving around to his right side where the jagged line of threadscore made him cringe. This was _his_ dragon. Fortunately, the Scoring did seem to be relatively minor, the Thread having hit his well-muscled side, about halfway between where R'yin's leg would have been and his hind leg. Shards! That had been CLOSE. It was a little deep, but it didn't look to have damaged anything vital. It would just hurt like fire for a couple sevendays.
**My poor brave boy. It will be alright, we will fix it. Stay calm, now.***
He looked around then, his eyes glassy with controlling his own reaction to Aerrath's pain. Now was when _he_ would come to the rescue, but this time, someone would have to rescue him.
It didn't take long between the time she saw the brown coming and when he had landed for Rhosyn to go into action. The Weyrwoman moved forward. }:Love, can you distract him for a bit?:{
**I will ease it** Orlaith immediately contacted Aerrath, trying to minimize his pain as best as she could while her rider prepared to work.
"Brownrider, is this the only injury?" She had to be sure, otherwise if she started to deal with it and something else was wrong, she could miss it entirely. Her hands went into the redwort solution as she prepared to numb the surrounding tissue before cleaning the wound. Once it was clean, she could stitch it up and put on a bandage. A candidate stood by, prepared to hand her what she needed from the things laid out on a tray. "I'll need sutures, dragon size."
R'yin was silent a moment, checking with Aerrath and his own mental awareness.
"Yes, goldrider. That is the only injury..." He said it with clipped words, though he knew Aerrath's pain would be numbed soon. It was odd having a goldrider tend to his dragon. His fingers itched to help. "Can I Help you, Weyrwoman?" He felt that he had to offer, given his own training, and Orlaith was helping with his brown. He muttered again, wondering how it missed him completely! "Will he be alright, Rhosyn?" He forgot her title in his worry.
"Certainly," she said slowly as she looked over the injury. It didn't look that bad. She worked quickly, with an assistant's help, to get the area numbed. Once she thought the salve had taken effect, she looked at R'yin.
"Does he feel this?" She poked the brown's side with her finger.
Looking up from scratching Aerrath's eyeridges, he waited for the brown's affirmation that he could not feel her poking, and nodded. "He says it feels funny to not feel that. But I think he means he does not feel that." He smiled weakly at her. Sometimes he didn't understand what Aerrath found funny, but he was glad the dragon was taking this fairly well. "He's never been 'Scored before, and I think he's a little curious at what is happening to him. He helps other dragons so often when I'm working, I think he is finding it odd to be the one who is hurt."
"It will help him later when he's trying to explain to them how they will feel." Rhosyn had thought about purposefully getting herself scored for just that reason a long time back, but of course no one would have allowed or abetted her in that. Older now, she would never consider the risk. "Now that he's numb, we're going to clean the wound." She flushed it with a redwort solution and then went about poking with a set of metal tweezers to pull out tissue that was no longer useful. "I'm not going to have to reattach anything, which is useful. These little tendons here will grow back themselves. See?" She pointed to where she was talking about, the pink muscle tissue shiny and pink to the eye.
R'yin nodded, he'd done the same thing himself a time or two. "You're right, Weyrwoman. It will help us be better at our craft." His lips twitched as he watched. It was just so strange watching someone else do the things he did for other dragons and their riders.
He busied himself distracting the brown while Rhosyn worked and tried to relax. It was easier now that the pain had
dulled for his dragon; he was able to focus more on other things.
"You do neat work, lady." He said quietly, watching her.
She smiled, keeping her attention on what she was doing. "Thanks. I've had quite a bit of practice over the Turns though nothing like when the Pass started." Those had been scary turns for Rhosyn. She had met her first threadfall at 25 turns old, very aware of how important Orlaith was to the future of the planet.
"It also helps that my dragon can keep your dragon from moving." She grinned.
R'yin almost laughed at her comment. He was a little older than the Weyrwoman, he was pretty sure, and had had his own practice over the turns. He'd been studying dragonhealing since he was 17 turns old, over 20 turns ago now. But she was his Weyrwoman and he wouldn't tease her that way. At least not until he got to know her better.
He did allow himself to chuckle at her second comment. "Yes, its certainly an advantage for you and Orlaith. Aerrath appreciates that too, when we work on blues and greens. He doesn't have a queen's ability to just command obedience, but he is certainly big enough to encourage them to be still."
He did make a little conversation as she worked. "I apprenticed to dragonhealing as soon as I arrived at River Bluff. Oh... my.. I guess it's been 23 turns ago now." His eyes misted over in memory. Some sadness surfaced as he remembered leaving home against his father's wishes, but then joy as Aerrath broke his shell and chose him. "When did you start studying?"
"Weyrlinghood. Of course we were separated from the others when it was time. All goldriders receive proper dragonhealing training, though some show more aptitude than others to learn more than the basics. Gives us something to do when we're down." If there was one thing that Rhosyn hated, it was idleness. Finishing what she needed,
she stepped back and scrubbed while an apprentice worked on the bandages.
Understanding in his eyes about "downtime", the brownrider was glad this particular goldrider seemed to have shown good aptitude for the Craft. R'yin nodded happily at the work, and the comfort his dragon was feeling. "Thank you lady. Your training and time shows in your fine work. It's been interesting to watch someone else work, and definitely will help us in our own Crafting." He stepped close to the unmarked shoulder and leaned on his brown. "I guess I'll need to fess up to my Wingleader and suffer through being grounded for a little while, while Aerrath heals." His voice sounded very mournful.
"Indeed. Course if I wasn't down here, you could ride with me." She gave a soft smile before drying her hands. "Aerrath will need to take it easy for a bit. The bandages will need to be changed once every two days. Keep it clean and free of dirt and he should be okay. Once it's knitting right, we can take out the smaller stitches." She looked up at Aerrath. "No showing off to the ladies for now!"
Orlaith had already moved on to assist some of the others, her attention focused on them since Aerrath was taken care of. Rhosyn felt her thoughts against hers, hoping there weren't any really bad ones.
The brownrider laughed at her comment. "He is not much of a show off, anyway, lady, but he says thank you very much. He feels much better." He smiled at the Weyrwoman, knowing she had other charges.
R'yin focused on his dragon, knowing they would be alright, and actually a bit grateful to have experienced the 'other side' of getting Scored. It would help them in the future, he was sure.
"You're welcome. Glad to do my duty and help how I can." She gave him a pat on the shoulder then headed to her next problem.
