Zathris had to admit he was pleased. He did hope that Wirnan took his
advice and sought out the girl's father. He knew Wirnan had been
lonely, that was easy to see. And if things went well, maybe this
young woman would be the one to help Wirnan with that loneliness. A
smile tickled the corners of his lips. It was easy to see that Wirnan
liked her enough.
The Lord Holder entered his chambers at a reasonable hour for once and
closed the door behind him. "Benani?" He'd not seen her since lunch
and was ready to just sit and relax with his lovely wife.
"In here," she responded from her bedchamber. Or she should say
'their' bedchamber since he never seemed to sleep in his except when
he was sick and didn't want to infect her.
Zathris tossed his coat over the back of his chair and slipped into
the bedchamber. "There you are." He crossed over to her and placed
a kiss upon her forehead. "How are you feeling?" The mornings had
been quite hard on her lately and it annoyed him that there was really
nothing he could do about it to fix it.
"Comes and goes," she said with half a smile. "I do as the healers
tell me and they assure me it will be over soon and then I'll feel
fine." She put her arm around him and her head on his chest a moment.
"I don't recall my mother having this sickness but then I was pretty
young maybe I just didn't notice," she smiled up at him. "How was
_your_ day?"
"Actually, today was pretty quiet. Managed to get caught up on a lot
of parchment work and the like." Zathris loosened the ties to his
tunic, ties that were already fairly loose, but weren't so loose that
the old Auntie's gasped about it. "I found out something
interesting."
"Oh?" she said "What did you find out?"
"Evidently there's a girl that's come into Wirnan's life." Zathris'
lopsided grin returned. It just amused him and pleased him at the
same time. "Sort of."
She smiled with Zathris. She liked the Steward and was pleased for
him. "Oh really?" she said.
"Well, he's definitely attracted to her. Thinks she's a bit young for
him, but she's twenty. I'd say that's not too young." Zathris had
certainly heard of marriages between people with age difference far
greater that. "I wouldn't say he's in love, and he admitted he wasn't
read to commit. I had a suggestion, though."
"Something I can do to help?" she asked.
"I don't think so. I think this is something he needs to do."
Zathris shook his head. "I'm not sure he would appreciate us trying
anything. I did suggest he talk to her father, though, make a
contract of courtship which would give him a chance to court her and
get to know her and see if she was suitable for marriage."
"Well perhaps I can get to know her a little and maybe venture an
opinion to help you."
"I guess that's an idea." Zathris chuckled. He knew his wife was
fishing for a name. He might as well give it to her. "Her name is
Kaya, she's the daughter of Yarovan of Turquoise Valley." Not that
Zathris had been told by Wirnan, he'd had to ask around.
"Oh, I think I met her in the solar." she said with a smile. "Lovely
needle work."
"You've met her?" Zathris sat up, eyes arching. "I met her once,
briefly when her father arrived. What's she like?" Besides having
lovely needle work.
"She seemed nice enough though we only talked for a short time. She
seemed a bit sad but did mention she'd met you and Wirnan." She mused
a moment then added, "I think she kind of likes Wirnan. Just the way
she said his name."
"Well then." Zathris stated thoughtfully as he reached out to draw
his wife into his embrace. "Perhaps there's something there."
