Kaya peered up at the clouds that streaked across the sky. Already it was
getting cooler, and it was cool enough to require a light cloak, grey
drifting over her shoulders from which a pleasant lavender peeked from its
folds. She lifted a hand to shade her eyes. While it wasn't particularly
bright, the glare was enough that the gesture helped. She sighed and let
her hand fall. She didn't have much time. Three more sevendays at most and
she had to be gone to make sure she could travel far enough to get out of
reach. She also had to reach the caravans, and if she left any later, she
would miss them at the stop. She just hoped that the information she'd
gotten was accurate.
With a swirl of her skirts, Kaya turned. She had intended to go back to her
rooms, work some more on her preparations. Except that there was a wall
where there hadn't been a few moments ago and Kaya ran right into it. She
stumbled back and peered up at said wall, then blinked in happy surprise.
"Wirnan!"
"Well, hello there, Kaya," Wirnan said, his face lighting up into a smile.
"I must say if someone has to nearly run me over, I'm glad it was you!"
Kaya felt her own smile returning the Steward's quite easily. "Hello
again." She glanced around, but the traffic was light. He wasn't with
anyone that she could tell, and fortunately, her parents were nowhere in
sight. "Just out walking? It's good to see you again."
"Yes, I was just heading to check on some things. Would you care to walk
with me?" He couldn't help but invite her as he wouldn't mind spending a bit
more time with her by his side.
"I would love to." Kaya brightened at the prospect. To be honest, Wirnan
was really the only person at the hold that she had felt any sort of
connection too. And she had so few friendships. "You must be doing
something awfully exciting. Tell me, are you going to set straight the
wayward ways of children and enlighten them to stay on the path of good
rather than falling into the shadows of evil?"
"Um," he paused and looked her with a quizzical expression on his face.
"No," he replied simply. "I was going to go examine the planting charts to
see where the farmers should plan to plant their crops for the next harvest.
It's really a rather mundane task."
Kaya sighed and shook her head. "No, no, that's no fun. You're going
to...you're going to...oh I don't know. I can't think of how to make that
better right now." So much for having a bit of fun. Still, maybe he was
just too set on doing his work and being dedicated to that. "Well, the
least I can do is accompany you on the way to this mundane task."
"It really isn't all that exciting." He felt terrible having her join him
for such a boring thing. "Perhaps I could take you to dinner tonight
instead? That would be much more pleasant than examining records of turns of
planting with me."
"Dinner?" Kaya arched an eyebrow at the invitation. That had to be a lot
more pleasant way to eat than with her family and Favinar's. "That sounds
like a good idea. In the dining hall? How about...hw about taking a dinner
somewhere else?"
"Hmm," he contemplated that, "I'm not sure if somewhere else would be
proper. Not my rooms, for certain. I would not wish others to assume
something that is not true. Where else did you have in mind?"
"Oh no, not in your rooms. I thought...well, maybe in one of the solars.
Somewhere public. Just with fewer people." Of course...Kaya could have
another option. "Or, if you don't mind waiting til the last half hour of
the dinner time, I could meet you then." By then her parents would be done
and she could sneak away to meet him. She would just not eat, feign no
appetite.
"I could wait," he replied. "I often don't eat until the later time as I'm
finishing up various tasks from the day. I'll meet you then?"
"If you don't mind waiting." Yes, that would work out. Kaya could do her
duty with her family and then head back later to meet Wirnan. Then she
could actually eat and probably eat better. After all, one's appetite was
better when one had pleasant company to eat with.
