Kaya watched her parents leave the dining hall. She had taken great pains
to eat very very slowly and there was some relief when they finally left.
She still had half of her dinner left to eat, however, but she didn't have
to eat so slowly. So she began to take bigger bites of her poultry, her mind
already working over what she would be doing that evening.

He walked up through the aisles. A hand came out to pinch the nearest drudge
who gave a small squeak. A lascivious smile crossed his lips and then it
disappeared as he came to Kaya's trestle table. Sliding into the empty seat
next to her, he allowed his hand to come across her shoulder. "Good day to
you then, future bride." His words didn't seem congratulatory, but rather
menacing in their import.

Kaya stiffened and shied away from the touch of the man. She fixed a smile
on her face, one bland and lacking any hint of warmth. "Hello Favinar."
But then his words sank in and the smile faded. "I'm sorry, what did you
say?"

"I have learned today that the contract has been made. You are to be my
lady." He looked down at her, thinking to himself. "We'll need to get you
some better stockings, but no matter." He gave a smile to the passing drudge
before coming back to look at Kaya.

"It has? I am?" Kaya's face went blank, but her mind was whirling. This
was not good. Not good at all. "I didn't realize that. When...when was it
decided?"

"Why, just this afternoon. In a few days time, you will stand with me
and then I will show you just how happy you should be." He was already thinking
of how she'd look big and pregnant. Perhaps she'd sit by the fire, sewing
some knit cap or other for the little ones. Kaya's habits of roaming around
and thinking she was right would not be allowed.

"I...I see." That wasn't part of the plan. Kaya hadn't expected things to
happen so fast, so soon. It made things a lot worse. She was close to being
ready, but she wasn't _quite_ there. Oh she had the supplies but...but...she had
hoped to have more the. But she was going to have to be ready, obviously,
since things had obviously changed. She had to escape! "I...suppose that will
be...interesting."

"Indeed. I will take care of you like a proper Holder should. We will have
strong children and you won't have to worry about anything." He leaned
closer to her and took her hand. "I can't wait to take you to my bed. So
beautiful..."

Kaya pulled her hand away, though it took great effort not to jerk it back
so hard that he might get offended. "You're...very kind." She frowned. His
words didn't sound good, not good at all. "What do you mean...'like a proper
Holder should?" There was more to what he had just and she was almost afraid to
know the answer.

"A holder's wife keeps the home and the children. She will make sure the
Hold runs smoothly while her husband provides food, clothing, shelter, and keeps
their people safe." He said that as if she should know it. "Did you not have
harper lessons, Kaya?"

Kaya couldn't help but roll her eyes. "I'm very much aware of that, Favinar, you
don't have to lecture me." And that wasn't what she was asking, but
maybe he was just being annoying.

"Good because I will need a good proper Southern wife if I am to succeed.
I will do so much better than Father. The Hold could be better, I know it."
The gleam in his eyes was unmistakable. Favinar was greedy.

"Yes, I'm sure you do." Kaya stood, her appetite gone. Favinar was
overbearing and she really did not need to hear him boasting about his
abilities and what a great Hold he would create.

He followed her out of the Dining Hall, thinking of the day that he could
put her beneath him for the rest of her life. He smiled again then. When
they were around the corner, he pushed her against the wall and held her
there with his body pressed hard against hers, his voice soft and dripping
with menace. "Kaya, you will be my perfect and obedient lady wife. Bring me
breakfast, breed me sons, and never leave me." He brought his lips to her
cheek, smelling her hair. "If you did...well," His hand lifted, fingers
curling about her slender neck, squeezing, as he leaned forward, lips pressed
against her ear and whispered, "well, you wouldn't." He pulled back, letting
go of her, nodding as he headed in a different direction. Favinar had a wedding
to get ready for.
