Kaya hadn't expected this. She knew her father was in talks. She knew he
was working on a contract, but she didn't realise that it was so close to
completion. That she was going to get married off so soon. She hurried
through the hallway, trying to put as much distance between Favinar and
herself as possible. She swallowed. He would not be gentle with her, that
much was for certain. She'd be going into a life of misery, and her father
saw nothing wrong with it. The girl stopped and leaned against a wall in
the hallway, both hands crossed over her stomach. This made things bad. It
meant she was going to have to leave sooner than she expected. She would
have to get the last of her supplies that very night. Yes. She would have
to leave in the morning. No. She would have to leave that very night. She
would get the supplies, go to the cave she had chosen, and not come back.
Wirnan happened upon her in that moment. His expression quickly turned to
one of concern at the way she looked. "Kaya? Are you alright?" He asked,
stepping up towards her to offer assistance if needed.
Kaya swallowed and for the second time that evening she fixed a smile on her
face, but the light refused to shine in her eyes. "I'm okay. It's just...I
got some bad news, that's all." She glanced back toward the dining hall,
but Favinar hadn't followed her. Thankfully. Probably ogling another
pretty drudge. "I just...wasn't expecting it."
"Bad news?" He replied, stepping closer to her and peering into her face.
"Is everyone alright?" He immediately began to think of what sorts of
disastrous things could have befallen her family.
Kaya tried to force her expression to lighten, but it was a futile attempt.
"It's...everyone's fine." Except her. She could still feel where his hand
had been wrapped around her neck and her hand went up, fingers lightly
touching it. "Just...surprising. That's all."
His eyes showed concern as he looked at her, but he had no reason to doubt
her. Clearly whatever it was was not something she wanted to share. "Perhaps
I should be on my way then. I don't wish to interfere in whatever is going
on."
Kaya shook her head and took a deep breath. "Would you...walk me to my
quarters?" She asked after a moment. It was her last night there. The
last chance to spend some time with a friend before....before..."And
just...chat for a while? Take the scenic route?"
"I would be most honored to walk with you." He moved into step beside her,
wishing he could offer her his arm, but he didn't wish to give any of the
passersby the wrong impression. "What would you like to chat about?"
"Anything." Kaya stated, then thought a moment more before clarifying.
"Anything happy. About you. Tell me about your day. Just...anything."
It was her last few moments before she would be scrambling and getting what
little she ahd left and taking it...but never returning. Kaya gave the man
a sidelong glance. He'd been a good friend while she was at the hold. She
was going to miss that. But it was now or never. She had to go. She had to
escape.
He told her of many things, the everyday tasks to the stories that were
often passed around the hold of various funny or exciting times. Their
little adventure together ended up leading farther into the evening hours
than either had anticipated. By the time he dropped her off at her door, it
was very late, but Wirnan couldn't even say he was tired. He'd enjoyed her
company, more so than he could recall having enjoyed anyone in quite a long
time. He was still worried about what had upset her so, but since she had
put it behind her and not shared it with him, he decided to do the same.
"Good night, Kaya. I'll look forward to seeing you again tomorrow. Perhaps
we could meet after my work is done?" Little did he know that the next time
he saw her things would be _very_ different indeed.
