G'nir

G'nir

The end of the Turn was approaching and it was time to evaluate
the past Turn and the Weyr's performance. It meant talking with
Wingleaders, giving input on their performance. G'nir looked U'kaiah's
report of Cyan wing. He was...disappointed. The report had arrived in
time, and it showed good results. The number of injuries and
causualities was actually lower than in the Azure wing. He had no reason
to complain about U'kaiah. The three month's trial period he had given
had pretty much passed, without incidents. U'kaiah had behaved well and
proved his capabilities.

Of course there was the rumours of him sleeping with his wingmates, but
everyone did that and as long as it didn't create bad talk or other
disruptions, it was tolerated. And G'nir had so hoped he could bring the
younger bronzerider down. Instead he was forced to praise him. Well,
fair was fair and G'nir believed in justice. He wasn't going to let his
personal feelings cloud his judgement. He glanced the clock. U'kaiah
should be arriving any moment.

The Cyan Wingleader just knew G'nir was looking for any reason to
remove him. He was, after all, the Weyrleader's greatest threat. But
U'kaiah had kept his nose clean and set about making his wing the best
in the Weyr. Which wasn't hard since they had been already in top form.
Still, he couldn't help but wonder if the rumors of his
relationship with Aileyan, however inflated, might be excuse G'nir was
looking for. Well, if he decided to pull that dirty trick, U'kaiah would
be ready to fight tooth and nail to preserve his position. He had lost
Cyan once, he would not let it go again! He game the Weyrleader's door
a smart tap that meant business before schooling his expression to one
of calm assurance.

G'nir called him in and waited until he was seated across the
desk. "Well, U'kaiah, the Turn is nearing it's end and it's time to look
back and see how it went and prepare fore the next one," his smile
didn't not reach the pale grey eyes.

"Yes, sir," U'kaiah nodded, waiting for the hammer to drop.

"I have to admit, you run a very good wing," G'nir said. "Cyan's
number of injuries and death is lowest in this weyr."

Praise certainly wasn't what the Wingleader had expected! "Thank you,
sir. I have good riders."

"Yes, you do. And keep a good care of them in the future too," G'nir's
voice came close to be growling.

Now that was more the Weyrleader U'kaiah expected to see. "I'm sorry,
sir, are you insinuating that you think I will _not_ take care of my
riders?" he asked innocently, as if he hadn't quite caught G'nir's
meaning.

"I expect you to take a good care of your riders, or I will find someone
else who does," G'nir eyed him coldly.

"Oh, well, sir, as you mentioned yourself, sir, we have lower death and
injury rates than any other Wing in the Weyr. Perhaps it's _those_
Wingleaders you should be concerned about, sir." U'kaiah was well aware
that G'nir himself was counted in that statement, and his sweet smile
was intended to remind the Weyrleader of that fact.

"Let me worry about them and just worry about yours," G'nir didn't miss
the slight.

"Don't worry, sir. I assure you, I will do everything in my power to
make sure that Cyan stays the top Wing in the Weyr." U'kaiah was kind
of enjoyed how defensive his Weyrleader seemed to be all of a sudden.
Did he hear the beat of Kalamath's wings gaining on his Nirreth? Well,
he better believe that his lifemate would be breathing down his bronze's
neck the next time Genith rose!

"I'm glad to hear it," G'nir said and actually meant it. The well being
of whole weyr was his main concern after all, and he could put his personal
rivalries aside when needed. "What this weyr needs right now is
stability," he said (meaning, don't try, I'm sticking into this position!)

"Well, there's never any guarantee of that, now is there, sir. I
suppose we should make ourselves ready for all possibilities." Meaning
he would do everything he could to make sure G'nir never felt completely
secure in his position as Weyrleader.

"In the end, it is the Queen who decides," G'nir agreed with a wolfish
grin.

"Queens sure are fickle, aren't they?" G'nir had only caught once, and
Genith didn't really know Kalamath. And even if he caught again,
U'kaiah still had the best wing in the Weyr. It was only a matter of
time.
