J'nev was still smarting from all the things Cardella had said. Sure,
she had been right about most of it. But where on Pern did she get off
accusing him of being like every other bronzerider! How did _she_ know
what a bronzerider was like? Unless she really was more experienced
that he had thought and she had been playing _him_ the whole time! Oh
yes, she had played him. He was sure of that. Played him for a fool.
Well, he was no sharding dimglow! He was not going to let her come out
looking like the victim of something she walked into _willingly_! And
she had said she loved him... What a load of crack dust!
The bronzerider waited outside the weyrling barracks, careful not to be
seen by Cardella. There was someone else he wanted to talk to.
"K'ale!" he called as he saw the brownrider walk towards him. "Can I
talk to you for a minute? Privately?"
Kale's brows drew together in puzzlement. The bronze rider had never
shown any interest in getting to know him in the past and he wondered,
why me? why now?
"Sure" he said.
"Listen, I know you're friends with Cardella," he said, his voice a
little quiet as he lead him down a path away from the Weyrling barracks.
"Is there anything wrong? I mean, did something happen that I don't
know about?"
K'ale rolled his eyes, "Oh you know how people are, they were
gossiping in the dining hall and we overheard some hurtful things. She
took them badly." he shrugged. "You know how girls are."
"I know how _some_ girls are. I never figured she was one of them,"
J'nev said, crossing his arms over his chest and looking like he was
utterly lost in all this mess. "She said she loved me. You would have
thought she would have trusted me."
He pulled back slightly at that. "What do you mean, she did J'nev, she
defends you all the time." He shook his head. "What is this about? You
two have a fight?"
"I don't know what happened!" J'nev cried mournfully, throwing his arms
out helplessly. "One moment she talked about missing me, the next
accusing me of all sorts of nasty things. She said I used her and that
it was only just a game to me. That she knew all about bronzeriders and
their 'ways', whatever that means. And yes, I said things in the heat
of the moment. But I never would have _ended_ it!"
"Oh?" he asked noncommittally, "Did she end it then?"
"I don't know. I think so. But I can't for the life of me figure out
why. I mean, how can a girl switch from 'I love you', 'I miss you', to
'Your a scumbag bronzerider who used me'? That's why I'm asking you if
there's anything wrong, anything that can _explain_ this sudden change.
I'm totally at a loss, K'ale, and I don't know what to do."
"I could try and talk to her and find out." he said in a half hearted
attempt to help. He felt rather uncomfortable to be accosted by the
the bronze rider. "I've only ever heard her sing your praises so I
haven't a clue." he said.
"I'm sorry to put this on you," J'nev said, well aware that he had
barely spoken to the weyrling up to this point. "It's just, I don't
know what to do. I thought I was doing the right thing to give her
space while she was a weyrling, but now she hates me, and nothing makes
sense any more."
"I'm as puzzled as you." he said not really knowing what to say. "All
I can do is talk to her and see what's going on. I know she was upset
the last time I saw her but she was busy consoling Awenth." He
shrugged still a bit unsure of the bronze rider and the situation.
"Anything you want me to tell her?" he asked.
"I don't know, just..." J'nev shrugged, as if at a loss for words.
"That I don't want it to end this way."
K'ale still wasn't quite sure about the situation, it just seemed odd
to him with what he'd heard about J'nev. It seemed heartfelt though so
he said "Look, like I said I'll tell her what you've said but I can't
promise anything."
"That's enough," the bronzerider assured him. "More than enough, K'ale.
Thank you, truely. I have no other way to get through to her right
now."
"Alright" K'ale said reaching out to pat the guys upper arm awkwardly.
}:Where are you mine?:{ **On my way** he thought back. "Gotta go,
Imalkyth is calling. You know how it is."
"See ya," he called as he turned and trotted back into the weyrling
barracks.
J'nev watched him go with a feeling of satisfaction. He'd been damned
/between/ before he let anyone make a fool out of him!
