Description: U'kaiah meets with his wingrider, D'ale
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 5 of Turn 5
D'ale clapped his hands together as he strode down the hall toward
U'kaiah's office. Once again it was time for his evaluation and he
felt pretty good about it. There shouldn't be an surprises but then
again, the wingleader was thorough and demanded peak performance. He
was sure there would be some suggestions for improvement. That was
his job after all.
"Come in, D'ale!" U'kaiah called as he finished up his notes on his last
meeting. "Have a seat, this will just take a moment."
He stepped into the room and sat in the chair across from U'kaiah
waiting patiently for him to finish what he was doing. He looked
around at the mementos and other evidence in the room of his life.
U'kaiah caught him looking at a little misshapen vessel with holes with
pencils sticking out of it. It looked rather like an upside down tree.
The Wingleader grinned. "Kaiafel made that for me. He's a creative
little guy, I have to say. He certainly didn't get it from me."
D'ale grinned. "I thought it had to be. You wouldn't believe some of
the things K'ale made for me back in the day."
"It's good to have a son. It does something for soul, I think," the
Wingleader said with a smile as he put his pencil back in it's hole.
"So, how is your son doing down in the weyrling ranks?"
"Tired." D'ale chuckled remembering his own weyrling days. "But he's
really applying himself. That is always good to hear."
"Those are busy days. I wish I could say I remember them well, but
they're all a blur now." U'kaiah can barely remember a time when
Kalamath wasn't at his full size. Of course, he would never forget that
Hatching day...
"That they were," he agreed nodding his head. "I'll be speaking to the
weyrlings soon about browrider duties." he half smiled.
"Can't think of a better pair to do it," the Wingleader nodded. "I mean
that. You have not only come back to us as good as ever, D'ale, but I
think you have shown renewed energy as of late."
"Why thanks U'kaiah," he said. Nodding slightly he added "I'm really
enjoying the return to Dragonsfall. I think it was a very positive
move." There were so many reasons that ran through his head he
couldn't begin to list them all.
"For all of us." They had certainly missed his experience in his Wing.
"How do you think you are doing now you're back? Any trouble
readjusting?"
"Things are really going well actually." The easy part was moving
back. The harder one was inserting himself back into the wing and
really building a rapport with the riders in his section. "I think
things are coming together well. We're learning each others moves and
avoiding costly errors." he nodded "No complaints."
"I do have one concern." And if did rather make U'kaiah feel like a bit
of a hypocrit bringing it up. "Your relationship with Kenza."
Well that was a bit of a blindside but he leaned forward. "In what way
is it a concern?" he asked genuinely curious.
"I just want to make sure it isn't too... partial. I mean, a tumble now
and then is your business, and genuine feelings of... caring... for each
other are fine." After all, wasn't that what he had shared with
Aileyan? "But I just want to make sure you remember that as a
Wingthird, there can't be any sort of commitment or understanding
between you too. If you know what I mean. I'm not trying to accuse you
of anything, just want to make sure that it doesn't effect either of
your performances."
He leaned back in his chair thinking it was a bit of the pot calling
the kettle black but he wasn't going to say that to the man's face. He
was a good wingleader and kept his personal life well... personal. He
never let it interfere with wing business and D'ale knew that was the
reassurance he wanted now.
"She's K'ale's mother," he smiled "We've been doing this dance a long
time now." He shrugged "I don't really think it's going to change into
more than the great friendship it's always been. If that's what you're
asking."
"Yes, that's all I'm asking," U'kaiah reassured him. He would be remiss
in his duties if he didn't say _something_, though it did make him
slightly uncomfortable. After all, he knew the rumors, however
unfounded, about himself and Aileyan's relationship. "Now that's
settled, that was really the only thing I had to say to you. You've
been a fine example in the wing, you've learned the new formations well,
and you and your lifemate fly strong and smart."
D'ale smiled at the Wingleaders words. "Thank you!" he said with
genuine warmth. That's what brown riders did. Steady and strong they
flew against Thread. Torerath would also be very pleased with their
evaluation. "Whatever we can do, we will."
U'kaiah stood and stretched, glad another name was ticked off his list.
"Well, keep it up. I like these nice, easy evaluations. Now let's get
lunch!"
D'ale stood in response and followed U'kaiah out with a laugh.
