Wirnan

Wirnan

Dragging his feet, Wirnan pushed open the door to his room with a heavy sigh. It had been a long set of days. Much time had gone into all the celebrations for Turn-over. Now, days had passed since then and things were settling back into routine. For the first time since arriving at Amber Hills, Wirnan felt a sense of sadness envelop him.

Watching all the others celebrate and dance with those they cared for had left an empty place in his heart. Sure, Wirnan had thought of family and such things in the past, but he'd never felt the longing for them the way he found himself feeling now. Days spent with Dwidara and Wrice and sweet little Caenifer had been intended to cheer him up. Instead, he found himself longing to have what his sister had in his own life.

Kicking off his shoes and sliding out of his jacket, Wirnan made his way over to the counter where he kept a bottle of his favorite ale. Pouring himself a glassful, he took a rather long swallow of the sweet tasting brew. Perhaps what he needed was to get out more. Wirnan snorted at that. He was out and about the hold all day, doing tasks and errands, keeping things running smoothly. He knew nearly all the inhabitants of Amber Hills in the months he'd been here. He loved the people. They were his family in a different way, yet why, then did he feel like a part of himself was somehow missing.

Taking another swig of his ale, he finished the cup and quickly moved to refill it. He knew he had to find a way to shake this mood he found himself in. He'd been trying for days, but nothing seemed to help. When he was out and around the hold, he could hide it easily enough, but tonight at dinner when Dwidara had looked at him with such intensity and asked if everything was alright, he knew he wasn't hiding his loneliness nearly well enough. His sister had enough things on her plate without dealing with his moods.

Shrugging off her questions, he made himself act more cheerful and like his usual self, but that alone had put a strain on him. Was it so wrong to long for alittle companionship? Why now, after all these Turns, was this feeling so strong. Perhaps it was the way Zathris looked at his sweet wife, Benani. Or perhaps it was the way his sister seemed to stare longingly at her husband when she thought no one was watching.

**Get a hold of yourself, Wirnan.** He mentally chided himself, even as he downed another glass of the liquor before refilling his cup once more. Drowning his sorrows and loneliness in the drink was not the answer, but for tonight, it at least eased the ache.

Emptying the bottle, he made a mental note to make sure he ordered another, before downing the last of the beverage and making his way to his lonely bed. Maybe tomorrow the tides would turn. Maybe this feeling of repressing sadness would lift and he could return to being the man he'd always been. Wirnan could only hope as he slid under the covers and allowed the alcohol to soothe him into a restless, solitary sleep.
