Theyzen's brow was furrowed in concentration as he measured the wooden rods one more time. **Measure twice, cut once...** That had been what his furniture teacher had always told him. It was a mantra he repeated to himself now and he measure the last rod that needed to be cut down to size. His concentration was interrupted by the unmistakeable giggle of a child. He smiled, welcoming the break.
Peaking his head out the workshop door, he smiled at the Master healer and his son. "Good afternoon, Master Miranek. Is this your boy?"
"Good afternoon Journeyman," replied the Healer, as he waved his son back over. "This is my youngest, Valnek."
The lad squirmed a little, did this mean he had to be polite?
"Good afternoon," he said after a moment, copying his father.
"Good afternoon, Valnek. I see you met my friend True," Theyzen smiled.
"Do you like canines?"
He nodded, suddenly shy.
"Valnek likes animals. Don't you son?" said the healer, smiling at his son. "Sometimes he gets like this, but in a few moments..."
True to form, Valnek had approached the canine. Slowly at first, then reaching out a hand to pet the animal.
True turned his head toward the little boy, panting happily, his lips almost looking as if he were smiling at the boy. Theyzen squatted down next to the golden canine, scratching his ruff and smiling at the little boy. "Don't worry, Valnek. He's very gentle. He won't bite you."
Miranek watched his son, a smile on his face.
"Da! I think he likes me," said the little one after a while.
"I think you're right," Theyzen said with a grin as the canines pink reach out for the boy's hand. He looked up towards the Master. "I think your son has made a new friend."
"I wish it was always that easy," said the healer. "When we first moved here from Jade Harbour, he'd just started Harper Classes there, he missed the youngsters in his group quite a lot, took some time for him to settle here."
Valnek meanwhile was grinning with delight as the canine licked him. It felt a little scratchy, but good. "Can we have a canine Da?"
"You should ask your mother that question," said his father, thinking that Hevalla's flit was enough of a pet for them all.
"But you can come visit True any time you want to," Theyzen assured him.
"He's usually here waiting for me to finish my work anyway."
"Can I?" The boy turned his face up to his father.
"If Journeyman Theyzen says it's okay, but make sure that your brother or sister is with you."
The woodcrafter nodded. "You and your brother and sisters can come any time my workshop door is open."
"I've only got one sister, she's my big sister." Valnek pulled a face, Helan was always telling him to grow up and behave.
Theyzen smiled. "Well, your older sister is welcome to come and meet True too." He turned to ther Healer as his son continued to pet and be licked by the canine. "Are you both out for a little exercise then? I was surprised to hear outside my door."
"Just a little walk." The healer lowered his voice, "To be honset Valnek was getting a little under my wife's feet, so I took him out to give her a break."
"Very kind of you." Someday Thevan would be old enough to get under his wife's feet too. He would love to do the same. "It's a good chance for a bit of father and son time."
"It is indeed, and he's working out that excess energy now."
"My son still works off his energy by crying," Theyzen chuckled. "At least he will sleep tonight, right?"
"He should do."
"Well, anytime I'm down here working he is welcome. True usually sits out here by the door. They wouldn't be in my way out here."
"A faithful friend then?"
Theyzen smiled as he patted the canine's golded head. "Yes, sir. That's why I call him True."
