Description: Galwen says good-bye to F'neb before Impressing green Neath
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 8 of Turn 5
Galwen blinked his eyes open, the much larger F'neb half sprawled across the bed and half on him. It was still dark in the weyr, so it must be early morning. Snuggling up to his friend, he tried to get back to sleep but something nagged at him, not allowing sleep to come back. Was today the day? He had lived in the Weyr long enough to know that the Hatching could occur any moment now.
He blinked again, mentally scanning himself. If it happened now, he was
in no way ready for it. His birthingday had only been yesterday and
whilst most of the day had passed by unforgotten, even by him, Cardella
and his friends had given him a little party back up in his da's weyr that evening. And T'bel had given him the most wonderful IOU present of all, the promise of a Flit egg if he_didn't_Impress! He chuckled at that. So either way with this Hatching, he had already won. And with a flit on tow, there would be no way the bullies could pick on him in the future. Of course, if he actually Impressed...
A hangover headache stabbed between his eyes and he was a mess, to say the least, after the private present F'neb had given him, in bed. A nice soak before anyone else was up would be nice, and the heat would get rid of his headache.
Nudging F'neb, he whispered, "heya sleepy head, let's go take a warm bath
before anyone else knows what we're up to." He lightly stroked F'neb's
chest and gave him a shy kiss on the neck.
"That's a nice way to wake up," F'neb said sleepily.
He continued stroking his chest and shoulder and softly kissed him.
"Ready for a bath?"
"I think I might be, but only if you stop with that. Or else we won't get
anywhere near the bathing pools."
"Ha! If we hurry and we're alone I_may_continue it down there!" Galwen
slipped away from F'neb and gathered up his clothes and some bathing cloths. "Here you go," and he threw F'neb his trousers, "let's go!"
A bath would feel so nice right now.
F'neb caught the clothes and slipped them on quickly. It was still early and so long as both of them got to where they were meant to be in time it
wouldn't be a problem. "Wait one moment," he said. "This might help,"
F'neb reached into a cupboard. "You forgot the soap sand."
Leading the way, Galwen walked quickly down the endless flight of steps
and out into the quiet snow that covered the grounds. The baths would feel so much nicer for this! Gripping F'neb's hand lightly he all but skipped into the inner lake and into one of the large bathing chambers. This early in the morning almost all but the kitchen staff in the Weyr would be asleep.
Quickly slipping out of his clothes he smiled at F'neb. "See, I thought
no one would be around." He jumped into the warm waters gleefully, making a big splash.
"If it's a water fight you want..." teased F'neb as he joined him in the
water. The bluerider scooped his hand along the top of the pool, sending a wave in Galwen's direction.
Galwen opened his mouth to say something but was swamped by the man wave.
Spluttering, he came up and splashed F'neb for all he was worth. "There!
Take that!"
There was some more splashing before F'neb worked his way closer to Galwen. "Okay, so now we're both wet, how about that scrub?"
"And which bit would you like 'scrubbed' first?" He gave the other boy a
cheeky grin.
"My back, I'll do yours and then you can do mine."
Galwen splashed a bit of water on him before reaching for the soap and
giving the back in question a good scrub. "When you Impressed, what
happened? How did it go?" He leaned his head on the clean shoulder as he
asked.
"It was one of those moments that words can't really describe. I just
looked at Ornigeth, and he looked at me. Life seemed to click into place,
like I knew who I was and who we were."
"How long did you Stand?" He turned so F'neb could scrub his back.
"Two and a half, nearly three turns," F'neb said as he reached for some soap sand to scrub Galwen's back in turn. "It was like Ornigeth knew I'd give up without him."
Galwen smiled at the thought and relaxed into F'neb's attentions. "It feels like this one is very soon. Like it could all start now!" He grinned at the thought of him spluttering into the hatching rounds, still wet and clutching a robe around him.
"Well..."
Just as F'neb was about to say more he was interrupted. }:Very soon, the
little ones are coming.:{
"I don't think you're that wrong. Listen..." A faint humming could be heard.
Galwen stared at his friend, suddenly frightened. What would he do? Would
he Impress or be left standing unwanted in a few hours? He opened his mouth to say something but found he couldn't.
"You'll be fine. Trust me, there's time to get clean and then get back to
the barracks for your robe. I'll be in the stands, waiting for you to
impress."
Galwen nodded, not really taking much in. He huddled up against F'neb,
feeling very cold. He let himself be led back to the edge of the pool.
F'neb got out, and reached out a hand back for Galwen. "I'll get you a
towel, and your clothes. You'll be fine."
The boy nodded and grabbed F'neb's hand to be hauled out. With the taller
boy's help he got dried off and dressed. He wrapped an arm around F'neb's
waist as they walked out of the inner lake and into the Weyr bowl. Finially getting his voice back, he said, "look at everyone!" Dragons were flying about, bringing the parents of some of the candidates and important Holders and their families to watch. Being that by this time in all Hatchings since he could remember Galwen had been in a busy kitchen helping, he never had seen the bussle that went on just before a hatching.
"Pretend they aren't here. It'll be just like you've practiced, you'll walk onto the sands and then everyone else won't matter." F'neb assured him. "Just think positive."
"Okay." Think positive? Him? He'd better try really quickly, for the
first time in his life. They entered the Weyr and climbed the steps to the candidate's barracks.
"Good luck," F'neb told him, and leaned forwards to give Galwen a gentle
kiss. "When you're a senior weyrling come and find me. I'll help you
celebrate."
He smiled at F'neb, trying to put on a brave face. That moment he had been dreading for more than awhile was now here. His words stuck in his throat, he gave F'neb a quick hug and walked into the barracks.
F'neb watched him go, knowing that soon he may be having to comfort or
congratulate. And he hoped that for Galwen's sake it was congratulate.
