Breakfast Talk

Writers: Paula, Chelle
Date Posted: 14th December 2010

Characters: U'das, Rhosyn
Description: Rhosyn and U'das have breakfast together.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 11, day 20 of Turn 5
Notes: Mentioned: J'ren, K'sedel, K'reyel

Having heard that a certain Wingleader had gotten himself hurt, Rhosyn
decided it was time to go check on the old throwback.
With Orlaith so heavy that she couldn't fly, she didn't have as much to do
anyhow. Inviting the bronzerider to breakfast, she sat
down at her table and waited to see if he'd show.

You did not turn down an invitation from a Weyrwoman, not if you were a
bronzerider. U'das had put on a better-than-everyday
tunic and clean trousers. "Good morning, Rhosyn," he greeted, walking over
to her table. He was wearing his roguish grin on his face.

"Morning U'das, feeling better I hope?" she offered as she gestured toward
the open seat. Then she began to tear apart a piece of
redfruit.

"Yes, thank you," U'das replied and took the seat. "It's just a minor Score,
although in a rather difficult place."

"I understand. It'll be good to get you healed up. How's everything else
with you?" She popped a piece of fruit into her mouth and
watched him.

"Just fine. Zack is sulking because his sprained wing keeps him from chasing
greens," U'das replied and poured himself klah. He held the
pitcher up and gave her questioning look that said: You want this too?

She shook her head no. Rhosyn preferred juice at breakfast most days or
milk. "Well I'll be down for awhile yet but that's the way
of things."

"Yes," U'das nodded, "You really can't speed up those things," he smiled.

"No. I just don't understand how humans do it. 9 whole months...that's
ridiculous. Glad it only takes Orlaith a few before she has babies."
Rhosyn snorted before pulling off a piece of sweet bun.

"Well, it's ten months actually," U'das, father of several children,
corrected with a good natured grin.

"Whatever it is. I am not doing it. There are enough drudges having babies
for the Weyr." Rhosyn shook her head to indicate her
thoughts on that. "You'll never do it either."

"No, I leave that to women," U'das chuckled.

"So U'das, what was it like when you were Weyrleader?" she asked with a
curious tone.

"Pretty much the same as now. Tsaera was the Weyrwoman and she changed
Weyrleaders often, so I wasn't Weyrleader that long.
We were earlier in the Pass and still learning the most effective way to
battle Thread. We had the usual problems," U'das replied
with a shrug and ate some bread.

"What was she like? I never got to meet her, though I always wanted to."
Rhosyn had heard all the stories and hoped she was a little
like the other woman.

"Effective, experienced, formidable in her own way, vulnerable in some other
ways," U'das said, finding it hard to describe the old Weyrwoman.
"She knew what she wanted and how to get it."

"Mm..I hope I'm like that." After finishing off the bun, she drank some of
the milk.

"I think most Weyrwoman are like that, comes with the job," U'das said.

"Do you? My last..well I didn't think she was very effective at all. Though
I guess in the ways that mattered she was." Rhosyn began to think
of the goldrider that had made things so hard for her over the turns.

"Well, everyone is effective in their own way. Some seem to be very
effective in making everyone else's life a misery," U'das said.
He had met people like that.

"I know there are people here who don't like me, but maybe..with turns
they'll see I have my good points." Personally, she didn't care.
**I'm not out to win a popularity contest** Still, she recognized that
things would go smoother if people realized she knew what she was
doing.

"You can't please everyone. No matter what you do," U'das said with an
understanding nod.

"Very true. The least I can try to do is please myself. Cause if I'm not
happy, the whole Weyr will know and that's never good."
Several ways to go about doing that flashed in her mind.

"Ah, the power of the Weyrwoman," U'das chuckled and tossed some bread into
his mouth.

"I'll certainly be happy once the eggs are laid." Orlaith wasn't a fussy
queen like some, which was wonderful. However,
there were some things she did take advantage of while she was egg heavy.

"We all will be," U'das said.

"So U'das, if K'sedel ever decides to hang up his straps, who do you think
would be the best replacement? Well besides K'reyel of course."
The Weyrleader's son had already proven he could do the job, but Rhosyn
wanted to know about the others. She needed to feel things out
for the future.

"Zack and I will certainly keep trying for that position until age forces us
aside," U'das replied with a slight smile. "There are plenty of young
bronzeriders coming up who could do it," he continued with a more serious
tone. "My 'Second, for instance, shows great promise."

"I've met him. Honestly, though, he seems too good. Has he ever gotten into
trouble or had to get through something?" Rhosyn
didn't know much about J'ren's past and she was curious.

"Of course he has, who hasn't? He has a child or two tucked away in a
different Weyr, but then, what bronzerider doesn't?" U'das replied.

"He seems to have a lot of kids. Well..what happened to him that was so
bad?" She tried to understand people but without knowing where
they came from, it was hard.

"A family tragedy when he was a child. I'm not the right person to tell you
about it," U'das said, with a serious tone. "It left emotional scars."

"Hmmm..." She leaned back in her seat, thinking. J'ren didn't seem
emotional. Then again, maybe he was hiding his problems. "Well, I won't
bother you too much longer. I suspect you'll be needing to stretch your
muscles."

"I'm not in a hurry," U'das shrugged.

"Allright then, sit there if you like, but I'm going to head off. I have to
see Solieira about some things to make sure she has what she needs."
Rhosyn got up, grabbed a pastry for the road and headed off with a mock
salute for the Wingleader.
