D'ale

D'ale

D'ale and Kenza had talked about an Impression gift for their son
should he find his lifemate in Genith's clutch hardening on the sands
and D'ale had an idea he wanted to pursue. He walked purposely down the
corridor to the office he wanted. Hopefully he would find P'nal there.
He knocked.

P'nal was keeping his duty times in his office, working on the reports
he needed to do for G'nir so the Weyrleader would be updated. He heard
the knock and wondered if it was one of his riders. "Come in."

He came in when the voice answered smiling, "P'nal!" he greeted his
long time acquaintance. "Good to see you."

"Oh...hello." He stood up and brushed his hands on his pants. "What brings
you around?"

D'ale smiled "My son," he said "Well actually my son is going to Stand
for Genith's clutch and I was looking for a gift. I remembered that you
had a very nice hand with leather." He remembered seeing some of the
giftings the man had made over the turns and had found his eyes drawn
to them every time. "Do you think you might have anything around that
might be suitable?"

"What type of thing were you thinking of?" P'nal had belts and smaller items
like carisaks ready all the time, but for something larger, he'd have
to actually work on it.

"Something small, an item that he'll use. You know how it is in the
weyrling barracks... nothing is safe if someone really needs it," he
smiled at the other man. He remembered his own chest and though he
himself was quite neat some of the others would ransack it looking for
a clean shirt to 'borrow' and later return dirty. "I'm thinking maybe
a belt or something like that."

"Allright. Do you want the belt stamped with anything..." P'nal started
to think about the possibilities.

D'ale's eyes popped open, "Oh I don't know, I hadn't thought about
that. Do you have any suggestions?"

"Well you can always have the name stamped. That helps with borrowing."
P'nal thought about what else might be useful. "Decorative flourishes..I can
always do studs if I can get some from the smiths."

"Oh that sounds excellent!" he said. "I am just going to have to trust
that he's going to Impress." D'ale said with a smile. His fingers
stroked his chin. "The name will be K'ale," he said with some assurance.

"I've seen your work, it does have style," he smiled. That was why
he'd thought of P'nal in the first place.

"Well thanks. K'ale...I can do that. What size is he?" He grabbed a hide to
make some notes.

"Actually he's about my size maybe a touch slimmer at the waist."

P'nal got up, looking for a string. When he found one, he stopped for a moment.
"May I?"

"Sure!" he grinned and lifted his arms.

Moving forward, he put the string deftly around D'ale's waist, pinching
the place where it met. Bringing it off, he measured it and wrote it down for
later. "Were you thinking a fancy buckle or something if the smiths can
manage it?"

D'ale was very glad he'd come to see P'nal about this, the man was
full of great ideas. Of course he had the marks for it. He hadn't had
anyone to spend them on for months. He just knew Kendale was going to
love it. "That sounds great!" he said. "Maybe something like that one
I saw you wearing a few months back. I didn't get a close look but it
seemed to be a dragon with its wings flared?"

"Oh? Aye that one had taken some time for the smith to style. I'll try to
see if they have any in stock. Otherwise, it might be a while." Running through
his mind if he had a piece of leather long enough to make the belt he
was thinking of, P'nal made a note of the buckle preference.

He nodded quite pleased with the way this was turning out. "Thanks,"
he said. "Do you need any marks now to cover the expense?" He didn't
want P'nal out of pocket on this little project of his. "Oh, and
congratulations on the new position. Well deserved," he smiled and
stuck out his hand.

"Thanks." He met his handshake and then let go. "I'm fine. I'll just ask for
payment when I'm done with it. That way, I really know the expense, whereas
now I'd just be estimating." The brownrider didn't have much time to craft
these days, but it was something that helped his nerves when a fall was coming.

"Alright then," he smiled. "I can't tell you how much I appreciate
this. He's going to love it."
