The brown weyrling came out of /between/ above Dragonsfall Weyr.
Notifying the watchdragon of its passenger, it circled and landed into
the Bowl after gaining permission. Rhosyn dismounted first, then the
weyrling followed. After receiving instructions, he waited with her as
escort until someone came to get her.
}:She's not from here,:{ Genith protested, not liking the idea of
letting yet _another_ stranger close to her Eggs.
**Well, it's not like I can turn her away, love,** Hygalia reminded her
sternly. **She's a Weyrwoman, not a drudge.**
}:That means nothing to me,:{ the gold snorted, spraying her eggs with
sand from her great breath.
"Be that as it may, she's here, and that means something to _me_.
Either let her in or I'm going, whether you like it or not!" This
Hatching could not happen soon enough for Hygalia, that was for sure.
}:Fine!:{ the gold trumpeted, making her rider squint slightly as the
barrage of sound attacked her ears.
**And if you do that again, I really will leave. I refuse to pave the
way as Pern's first _deaf_ Weyrwoman!** She walked up the stairs and
asked the drudge to find someone to escort the waiting goldrider back to
the Sands. And to bring some fresh treats, klah, cheese, and a skin of
wine with two glasses. Whatever she and Rhosyn didn't eat now would not
go to waste later.
The young brown heard the noise and responded by looking everywhere to
make sure he hadn't done anything wrong. When someone showed up to show
her to the Grounds, Rhosyn gave the weyrling permission to have a meal
while she was visiting with instructions to meet her back in a
candlemark or so. As they headed into the Sands, she mentally mapped the
diffferences between Dragonsfall and River Bluff as she saw them. When
Genith came into view, she stopped, waiting for Hygalia to take her into
the Sands.
"This is a welcome surprise." Hygalia smiled, reaching out her hand to
the Weyrwoman as she met her at the door. "How in Faranth's name did
you get your lifemate to let you leave the Weyr? Mine will hardly let
me leave her sight for more than a few minutes."
"Orlaith is the opposite. When she has eggs, she doesn't want to be
bothered unless it's absolutely necessary." Rhosyn shrugged, not
attempting to figure her dragon out. "But I thought it was my turn, so
here I am. And my congratulations of course."
"Well, come in," Hygalia said invitingly, stepping to the side to allow
her to pass through. "Don't mind Genith. She might hiss a little at
you, but, well, you know all about it."
"Of course." The other queen wouldn't intimidate Rhosyn since she knew
all about how they worked and was used to dealing with a dragon of that
size. "She doesn't let you have company then hm?" **That has to be
boring**
"Sometimes. But she wouldn't even let G'nir come in to watch the eggs be
Clutched until I put my foot down." That had been a rather epic battle
in Hygalia's mind. "She's fine when she's not Clutching. As soon as
her feet hit the Hatching Sands, though, she turns into a crazed...
well, for lack of a better word, wherry."
Smiling at that description, Rhosyn giggled softly. "No one saw Orlaith
clutch. She snuck around while I was sleeping. I woke up and saw the
eggs."
"Oh it wouldn't matter what time of the night, at the _first_ sign of
getting ready to Clutch, Genith makes sure I'm awake, in my seat and
ready to 'ooo' and 'aaaah' over each one." She laughed, though in truth
it could be quite annoying. "I only get peace when she's sleeping, and
you can bet I get a stern talking to if I am not right in my usual place
when she opens her eyes."
"Mmm..very demanding. Orlaith is in other ways, just not with the eggs.
Or if she is, Nikornath gets most of it." Rhosyn shrugged, not feeling
sorry for the bronze in the slightest.
"Oh well, enough feeling sorry for myself," Hygalia said, straightening
her back and deciding her usually positive attitude was being influenced
slightly by her gold's foul mood. "Tell me the news of the outside
world. Anything exciting going on at River Bluff?"
"Well the joint drills went well with your Weyrleader as you know. And
I'm waiting for Orlaith to drop her eggs any day. Other than that, it's
the same old thing except we did find a boy...he was mistreated.
K'sedel's let him stay." She completely agreed with that and was proud
of her Weyrleader.
"There are too many of those in the world, I'm afraid." Dragonsfall had
their fair share as well. "If the Holds don't want them, we'll
certainly take them! Shards, I still remember when greens and blues
were lost because of too few choices."
"Aye..things were hard there for a bit. I aim to have plenty there for
my eggs though." Rhosyn's tone was quite resolute on that score.
"Do you have many Searchriders?" Hygalia always thought they could do
with more Candidates, but after the long stretch without Hatchings,
Dragonsfall still had quite a few to choose from.
"We have at least two per wing usually," Rhosyn answered, knowing that
they usually had at least one searchrider go out with each sweep group
to expedite things.
"I hear your Weyrleader's son is a Searchrider as well." She had yet to
meet the Weyrleader personally, but she had learned as much as she could
about each one.
"Oh aye? R'sedel? He's something else. I love him to death, though. The
other one is a Wingleader. K'sedel was quite prolific. They have family
over at Dolphin Cove too." Rhosyn really needed to catch up with the
greenrider. "And what about your Weyrleader then, Hygalia? Did he turn
out to be the one you wanted?"
"I honestly had no expectations. I avoided the bronzeriders before she
rose," she explained. "I didn't want my judgment to cloud her choosing.
I knew she'd choose the one I needed. But I've found what I need and
what I want are often different things. I left the decision to her and
the dragons, and so far things are working well! Though I have to
admit, with all the turn over and logistics of switching leaders, and
her mood since Clutching, I haven't talked to him nearly as much as I
should."
"I'm glad in a lot of ways that I have K'sedel's turns of experience to
fall back on. It's hard talking to him sometimes, though, cause I feel
like I'm going to get a scolding," she frowned though her admiration for
her Weyrleader was evident.
Hygalia's eyes widened a little. "_Has_ he scolded you?"
"Not yet," she grinned. "So far so good. I think it's also good too,
though that he's older sometimes cause if it was a young rider..I might
try to..well unconsciously I'd be liable to take over." Rhosyn's look
was sheepish, but she could admit her faults.
"No reason to take over as long as they know their business," the other
goldrider smiled. She certainly didn't judge Rhosyn for that tendency.
Few weak women Impressed a gold, after all.
"Honestly, though...I wish N'vanik wasn't at Dolphin Cove. When I went
down for the Hatching..And to think, he was at Vista Point with me. He
grew up right, that one." She licked her lips once, thinking about him
as she had found herself doing every now and again. "Have you seen him?"
"No, I haven't, but I have heard of him." Both as Weyrleader and his
reputation from before, though she wouldn't mention that.
She took a drink to chase one of the biscuits she'd taken from the tray.
"I'm glad everything's going well for you, though. I still haven't
spoken to Traelyn."
"I hear she used to come to Dragonsfall from time to time, but she
hasn't come for quite a while." It was one of the rumors that ran
around the Weyr. Apparently she had quite the fling with their
Wingleader, U'kaiah.
"MMmmm..." Absorbing that, she crossed her legs and shifted in her seat.
"Well, I may have to start coming more regular for a break from the
heat. I swear..it's like Rukbat just sits on top of River Bluff. The
Wingleaders get nervous when I run around in my underwear, but what else
is a girl to do?"
"I have to admit, the cooler temperatures and lack of humidity was one
of Dragonsfall's great draws for me." Not to mention the seasons. One
could appreciate the spring so much more when there was a winter leading
up to it.
"Well it's been wonderful chatting with you, my dear, but I don't want
Genith to snap. I'd better be going anyway. If you need anything,
though, we're not far." She took one last drink, savoring it.
"It was nice having company for a while." It certainly made the time go
by a little faster. "I hope to see you at the Hatching."
"I'll try my best to make it, though with Orlaith and eggs..they may not
let me if K'sedel leaves the Weyr. One of us should probably stay behind
when there's a clutch." She frowned, knowing she would have to talk it
over with him. "I'll let you know though." On that promise, she gave
Hygalia
a light tap on the shoulder before escaping the Grounds to find her
weyrling.
