G'nir

It irritated G'nir that his Weyrwoman had done it first, met her counterpart
in River Bluff Weyr. Hygalia's visit had been inofficial however. G'nir had
send K'sedel an official invitation. The two weyrs had a common border, and
sometimes Thread Fall overlapped their both's territories. The border area
was mostly uninhabited mountain range, but still the two Weyrleader should
at least know each other, so they could co-ordinate the joint Falls better.
G'nir had read from past records about joint drills between the two Weyrs.
The idea intrigued him. However, that had been early in the Pass, and now it
probably wouldn't be nesessary. It couldn't hurt to ask though.

He had asked the kitchen to bring in refreshments, while he waited the other
Weyrleader.

Nikornath bugled as the pair came from etween. The watch dragon bellowed
a response as the bronze spiralled down into the weyrbowl. It was moments
later that the River Bluff weyrleader had landed and was requesting
directions to the new Weyrleader's office.

}: Nikornarth is here,:{ Nirreth informed his rider after receiving the word
from Watch dragon.

G'nir gave his office a one more look. Except for few interesting things he
had found from the Weyr's store, like oddly shaped vase and beautiful wall
hanging, it was rather utilitarian. He didn't believe in lavish show of
luxuries. This was a place where you worked.

K'sedel raised a hand and knocked at G'nir's office door, wondering just
what sort of man was behind it.

Hearing the knock, G'nir went to open the door. "Welcome to Dragonsfall,
K'sedel," he greeted with friendly smile.

"It's good to be here," K'sedel replied. "Thank you for inviting me G'nir."

"It's pleasure to meet you, sir," G'nir offered his hand to a firm handshake
and guided him to his office.

"And you," K'sedel took the proferred hand and returned the greeting.

"I'm glad you could come. Refreshments?" G'nir was nothing but perfect host.

"Some Klah would be nice." That would get the niceties out of the way.
surely this was not intended as a purely social call.

G'nir nodded and poured them both cups. He pushed the sweetener and milk
closer, so K'sedel could add them if he wished.

" I thought that two of us need know each other. We do have joint Falls now
and then," G'nir said.

"We do, and we've usually co-ordinated them to try and get the best out of
all our riders."

G'nir nodded. "Co-operation is important when the Weyrs have common border.
Never mind that it's mostly uninhabitated mountain. There are still few
holds up there and it's too cold for grubs."

"At least winter weather up there helps with those spots that we or the
ground crew can't get to."

"Yes, thank Faranth for small favours," G'nir smiled.

"Small they maybe, but they are welcome." K'sedel reached into his belt
pouch. "I brought some diagrammes that we've used for planning formations in
the past."

"Sounds interesting," G'nir's eyes sparked with curiosity.

K'sedel laid the hides out on G'nir's desk, trying not to disturb anything
already there. "This represents the mountain range," he said with a gesture.
"This is River Bluff's side, this is your side."

"I see," G'nir studied the map. "Is that Iron lake?" He pointed a small dot
above Garnet Valley hold.

"Yes, that way leads down into Garnet Valley," K'sedel traced his finger
down the route. "We've held drills in the past, using Iron Lake as a meeting
point, with Holder Alrog's permission." It was one thing for a wing of
dragons that a hold looked to for protection to appear above them, but for
two Weyrs to send dragons it meant not disturbing the population too much.

"Two Weyrs is too much to any hold," G'nir agreed. "Any other places or
landmarks that could used as a meeting point?"

"Echo Pass is an option. There isn't much there now other than a building
occasionally used by holders." It was a tiny dot on the map. "Most of the
turn round there is nobody there, it seems to only be occupied for maybe a
month or so in the summer."

"It looks like a good, logical choice," G'nir agreed.

"At this time of the turn there are few herdbeasts or caprines up there, so
we'd not disturb too many people."

"A herder's shelter?" G'nir asked.

"That's all, and there is a stream as well through the middle, so it is easy
to find."

"Good," G'nir said.

"I'd suggest a joint drill some time in the next two sevendays. I think that
it might be a good idea to have all the Wingleaders and their seconds meet
first to plan it out. River Bluff will be more than happy to host that
meeting."

"That sounds fine to me. I'm curious to see River Bluff Weyr," G'nir
agreed. "It's been over two turns since the Weyrs drilled together. It's
good to refresh the skill now and then."

"And perhaps have some friendly competition maybe? I'm sure we both have
groups of weyrlings that could toss ropes," suggested K'sedel. He knew if
his wings came out on top they'd be getting an extra rest day.

"We will win," G'nir said with wolfish grin. He was certainly going to offer
a handsome reward to his riders, so they would put out the best performance.

"So all that remains is to actually look at the calendar and pick out a
date."

"Not too close to a Fall day," G'nir suggested and pulled out his calender
and Weyr's schedules.

"How about here?" K'sedel pointed to day 22 of the month. "Two days after
fall for you, and three days before for us."

"Sounds good to me," G'nir said after consulting his calendar. There was a
drill scheduled to that day, but, hey, this was drill too, just a bigger
one.

"Perhaps we should meet again nearer the time with our wingleaders and plan
a few 'surprises' for our riders?" suggested K'sedel.

"I love the idea, " G'nir said with wicked little smile.

"Then I think we have a plan."
