The habits of many turns as a candidate were slow to fade. And that meant
that when approaching the office used by the Weyrlingmaster's third
Teseada
still felt a slight tingle of apprehension,. It was stupid, that much she
knew but she couldn't help it.
She pushed the feeling down as she knocked on E'naer's door. "Do you have
a few minutes?"
"Of course I have, get in, please," the greenrider replied and got up to
move a pile of hides from his visitor's chair.
Searchriders were bringing in new candidates which always meant more
hidework.
"How have you been?" she asked as she took the seat.
"Just fine, busy," E'naer replied. "And you, Weyrwoman's second?" He just
loved using that title with her. He had seen her Impress, he had trained
her
in through her weyrlinghood.
"Working hard helping the new Weyrwoman settle in." Once she'd thought it
might have been her doing that by servicing flame throwers and the like,
not
greeting her as a fellow goldrider.
"So, what does bring you here to my office?" E'naer asked.
"A few things," said Teseada, finally relaxing a little. "Firstly how are
the current weyrlings doing?"
"Progressing nicely in their training. There's few very good ones and few
who need extra tutoring," E'naer replied. "We haven't had any major
injuries
or deaths," the _yet_ was left unsaid. The most dangerous part of the
weyrling training was still ahead of them.
"That's good to hear." The first trips /between/ were nervy for all.
"Perhaps we might want to organise a little party for them when they
become Senior Weyrlings?"
"Parties are always good for the morale," E'naer nodded.
"I'll get onto Tatitem about that. Which brings me to the other reason I
came here. We'll have a clutching soon and then a hatching. How are we
going
with bringing in candidates?"
"Doing very well, the Search riders are doing full days for Searches.
First thing the new Weyrleader did was to send out the Searchriders. Eager
isn't
he? His first Clutch if I understood correctly," E'naer replied.
"So I hear. He'll be wanting only the best for them, just like I do for
Onnyth."
"Always a good thing," E'naer said. "I've also gone thru the candidates we
have from earlier and the weyrbrats. We have few that are awfully close to
being over-aged to Stand."
"A few older ones might settle the younger ones down."
"Or just teach them more bad habits," the greenrider chuckled.
"I'm sure they'll do just fine."
"They usually do. The plus point is that older candidates, when they
Impress, will graduate straight to Fighting wings," E'naer nodded.
"And the more riders we have, the better."
"Exactly," E'naer nodded.
"Thanks for this. I'll go see the Headwoman next, and then I get to write
a report for the archives..."
"Ooo, reports, those are fun," the Weyrlingmaster's Third grunted.
"Now I know why you made me write so many in class."
"Practice makes perfect," E'naer said with guilty glace towards his hide
piles.
"It does, and I should get to them now if I want time to eat later."
"Same here," the wingthird nodded.
"Thanks for this," Teseada sad as she got to her feet. "I'm glad you could
make the time."
"I always have time for you, Teseada," E'naer said and got up too to show
her out.
"Flattery will get you everywhere," the goldrider told him with a grin.
"Of course it does," the greenrider grinned back.
