G'nir

G'nir

The goldrider clutched the rolled up hide in her hand as she made her
way to the new Weyrleader's office. She was sure he was still buried in
hidework, and would hardly like _more_, but she had been looking for an
excuse to see him all day. How were they going to get to be a good
team, after all, without trying to act like one?

"May I come in?" she asked, peeking her head in the door.

"Of course you can," G'nir replied, lifthing his gaze from the hides and
beaconing her in.

"Thank you," she said as she took a confident step into his office and
pulled out a chair for herself. "I hope you don't mind, but I took the
liberty of asking a drudge to bring up some klah for us. And a bubbly
or two."

"I don't mind, that was very considerate of you," G'nir said, berating
himself for not getting up and offering her a chair.

"Well, I know _I_ needed it." Her eyes scanned the room quickly. She
hadn't spent too much time in there when T'mahl was Weyrleader, knowing
that there could be a change as soon as her gold rose. Hygalia could
tell some things had changed in the room, though she could not put her
finger on anything specific. "I hope I'm not disturbing you."

"How could you ever disturb me?" G'nir said.

"Give it a little while. You might find me quite annoying," she smiled,
unrolling the hide she had brought. "I have a letter of congratulations
from the Lord Holder of Jagged Peaks, and a not-so-subtle complaint
about the amount he has been asked to give as tithes. I think he's
testing us already."

G'nir snorted. "Just you wait, the rest of them will follow," he said.
He knew the Lord holders, knew that they would be testing them, testing
how hard they could push, where his limits were. Well, they would find
out that his limits held tight. "I'll write him a letter. If he withhold's
his tithes, we will withhold the protection we offer to his holdings."

"I doubt that it will come to that," she said, setting the hide on his
desk for him to read at his pleasure. "If he really had the balls to
back up his complaints, he wouldn't have hidden them in a congratulatory
letter."

G'nir nodded. "He wouldn't take the risk."

The drudge knocked on the door just then. Hygalia stood to meet her at
the door and take the tray from her with a grateful nod. "Do you like
sweetener or cream in your klah? I personally take both."

"I take mine black, thank you," he replied.

"Then black it is," she smiled, picking up the kettle to pour them each
a drink. "How do you like your new office, G'nir?"

"I like it," G'nir replied and lifted the mug in salute. "Especially
when I got the furniture moved to places more to my taste," he added and
looked around. He had found few interesting items from the Weyr's store to
place in his office.

Maybe that was the difference Hygalia had noticed. "It's important to
make your office your own. I know I had to completely rearrange mine
before I could really concentrate on my work. It makes a person feel
settled, I guess."

"So it does," G'nir agreed and sipped his klah.

"I hear you're from here. Why did you leave Dragonsfall when you did?"
Hygalia asked curiously, wanting to know more about him than just his
record.

"They need bronzeriders to lead those new Weyrs in North," G'nir
replied. "And the then Weyrleader felt that my tie to Beryl Plains was
interfering my duties somehow." (In otherwords, he had been arrogant
little lordling and he had just been tired of him). He had learned to be
bit more diplomatic since then.

"Do you still maintain your relationship with them?" she asked,
wondering if it might still be a conflict of interest at times.

"I've fostered my daughter with them. But do I still let my father
dictate what I do? No, not any longer."

"Well, I would assume not since a weak-willed man would not attract a
bronze, especially not one worthy of a senior queen." But at some point
he _had_ been ruled by his father. That was interesting. She'd file
that away in the back of her mind. Still, Hygalia wasn't worried. She
was the one who monitored the tithes coming in. She might take an extra
long look at Beryl Plain's contribution, but she certainly wasn't going
to make a show of it. "You have more than the one daughter, do you
not?"

"I have a son too. He lives with his mother at North. If I have sired
more than those two, their mothers haven't told me."

"They must be very proud of your accomplishment." It was quite a change
from having their father kicked out of one weyr to become the leader of
another! But who knew just what he told them about his reasons for
leaving his last home.

"I'm sure they are, if they undrestand what it means," G'nir grinned
with genuine humour. Rinnea was so young! Grilec would probably
understand the implications.

"Is your son at your former Weyr?" she asked, steering the conversation
back in the direction of his past.

"Yes, that's right," he replied.

"May I ask why you decided to come back to Dragonsfall?"

"It's the weyr I Impressed," G'nir replied.

"You missed it?" The fact that he had completely skipped over
everything in his record that lead up to his leaving the Weyr did not
escape her notice, but she'd pretend it did.

"Surprisingly, yes," G'nir replied. Faranth knew, he had been terribly
difficult weyrling. Spoiled and demanding.

"I think many people are surprised how a place can feel like home even
when you were not born to it." Hygalia had certainly experienced that
when she lived in the Hold with her Aunt and Uncle. "We are certainly
lucky you did come back to us."

"Yes," G'nir agreed to that sentiment.

Hygalia resisted the urge to raise an eyebrow. He was a smug one. Oh
well, he could be worked with. She had dealt with inflamed egos before.
"Well, I had best get back to my hide work. Thank you for the klah."
