Description: E'naer gets to know one of the new Candidates
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 15 of Turn 5
E'naer was doing his best to learn to know the candidates before they Impressed. After they had Impressed, things were too hectic to learn to know what kind of people they were. However, there was always a person or two that seemed to manage to slip past the cracks. This Galwen for example, the files said he was Weyrbred, but the greenrider had no memory of him. He didn't even remember what he looked like! Had he taken part to the candidate classes? To correct such a oversight, he called the candidate to his office.
The small boy stumbled through the door, out of breath from racing from the kitchens. Though he was now a considered a candidate, he found it easier to slip back to the life he had always known in the lower Caverns, even skipping classes to help out his foster mother and the others there. E'naer's green beauty, Eillispeth, had always been one of Galwen's favorites. To have a dragon like her would be like waking in a dream. But this wasn't going to happen. He just knew he was going to be left wanting the day the Hatching occured.
Galwen glanced quickly at E'naer and gulped.
"You are Galwen?" E'naer checked, studying the boy curiously. Now that he saw him, he did remember seeing him around the kitchen. He gave him a friendly smile.
Galwen could only manage a nod before staring at the floor before his feet with great interest.
"Please, take a seat, I don't bite," E'naer said with kind tone."How have your candidate classes been?" He asked.
Galwen all but fell into the seat, stumbling over his own foot. Blushing feriously, he managed to stammer, "fine, thank you sir."
Would E'naer know he was lying? He had to, wasn't that why he had been called in to his office? Maybe he would get into greater trouble if he lied about it, about how much he hated the whole thing. It just seemed a cruel game to him, this candidate training. No dragon worth his or her salt would come within a mile of him. Maybe it was best to be honest.
Still blushing, he said, "sir? I haven't actually been to many
classes." He felt like crying right there and then.
"And why not?" E'naer asked, his tone still kind and gentle. "I know you're weyrbred, so you don't have to take part to all classess. But there are lessons that even a weyrbred has to take."
"Well, I just think it's all going to be a waste of time, I mean, for me, I mean..." Did he just say that? He hunched up, waiting for a tirade from E'naer.
"Waste of time? Why do you think so?" the greenrider wanted to know.
Screwing his eyes shut, he blurted out, "no dragon will want me."
"And you know what the dragons are thinking?" E'naer asked with raised eyebrows. "Don't count the hatchlings until all the eggs are cracked."
Galwen was mortified. He knew he should have kept his mouth
shut. Confiding in anyone never led to any good. He hunched for the lecture that surely had to be coming.
E'naer realized he had to be careful of what he said next. The boy obviously had no self-confidence at all.
"Even if you didn't Impress, the lessons wouldn't be waste of time. Learning is never waste of time. Perhaps you're dragged to help dragonhealers with injured dragon? Then knowing dragon's anatomy would be a great help."
That was true, but it didn't make the idea of the upcoming Hatching any easier. He'd seen enough of them, seen the bitterly disappointed candidates stumbling off the hot sands. Shards, he didn't want to be one of them.
Perhaps it was because he did admire E'naer's Eillispeth so, he bravely asked, "what was it like for you, Impressing, I mean?"
"A dream come true. It's almost impossible to describe the feeling. You have to experience it yourself to understand. Eilli's colour didn't come as surprise, all the rest was a surprise," E'naer replied with a dreamy look on his face.
Galwen sat quietly, hoping the older man would continue. He really was quite handsome, when he was talking of Eillispeth.
"How about you, what colour of dragon do you have in your daydreams" E'naer asked, attempting to lure the boy to talk about himself.
"Oh...a green like your's. But my da's blue is nice too." He should be loyal to Manarth, his father's lifemate
"Green's the best, no doubt in that," E'naer smiled.
Galwen smiled back, hoping the older man would go on.
"They are also the most numerous of dragon colours, so changes of you Impressing one is rather good one," E'naer remarked.
Galwen sighed, hoping the man would talk more about his lifemate. He thought about his foster mother in the kitchens, no doubt wondering where he was.
"Since you so like green, would you like to help me when I next wash Eillispeth?" E'naer asked.
"Really? Could I?" Was he serious? He's love to interact with
Eillispeth!
"Yes, really," E'near nodded. "She just loves attention." Besides, it was exellent way to learn to know the boy in less formal situation.
"Okay, now?" he asked, smiling.
"Yes, for now. I send you a word next time I wash Eillie," E'naer
replied.
Oh, he had been hoping E'naer meant right now. But the man had more pressing things to do than entertain a boy, Galwen was sure. With the hope of getting to interact with Eillispeth lifting his heart, the young boy stood to leave. Surely his foster mother would be most annoyed that the dishes were still unwashed, where he had left them.
