Learning About Dareera

Writers: Ames, Emma
Date Posted: 15th August 2010

Characters: Lisadi, Miranek
Description: Lisadi speaks with Masterhealer Miranek about the condition of her new fosterling, Dareera.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 10, day 10 of Turn 5
Notes: This comes after EFH: Take Care of the Little Ones, but before EFH: Life, Loss, and Laughter
Mentioned: Corowal, Dareera (NPC), Trewlin (NPC)

Following her meeting with Lord Corowal, Lisadi had checked in on the
Harper Classes to try and meet Trewlin. However, the students were
busy at work and she did not want to interrupt. Deciding she would
meet up with the young boy later in the day, she made her way to the
infirmary to find Miranek and hopefully meet young Dareera. Lisadi's
heart was almost pounding as she entered the somewhat sterile room.
What would the child think of her when they met?

When one of the healers approached, Lisadi inquired as to the
whereabouts of Miranek, the master healer. Once he'd been pointed out,
she made her way to his location.

"Excuse me, Master Miranek. Do you have a moment, sir?"

"Certainly," the healer turned to see the woman. "You are?"

"My name is Lisadi, sir. Lord Corowal has just given me charge of
young Dareera. He said I should speak with you about her." Lisadi
couldn't help but to glance around the room, wondering if she would
see the young girl.

"I see," Miranek had been informed that a foster mother had been found for
the girl. "Would you like to come to my office while I explain about her
injuries to you?"

"Of course, Master Healer," Lisadi wanted to make sure she understood
what had transpired for the young girl, so she could do her best to
help her overcome this tragedy. She wondered what kind of injuries the
girl had sustained.

The healer led her to a small office, and pulled out a chair for Dareera's
new carer. "She's a had a bit of a bad time," he began. "Losing a home is
never easy, however old you are."

As she followed behind him, Lisadi closed her eyes for a moment and
hoped for strength. So much loss. It brought back memories far too
fresh in her own life.

"Yes, that would be hard on anyone. I am fairly new here myself, but
mine was by choice," **for the most part**, she added silently to
herself. "Tell me about what happened to her, if you can."

"We think she fell, running from the fire. There was a nasty break, it was a
compound fracture, the bones were through the skin, like this." Miranek took
a slate and began to sketch. "The wound became infected."

Lisadi frowned as she watched the picture the healer drew. **The poor
dear,** she thought as she winced slightly at the image. "Can she
walk? Or will she have permanent problems because of the break?"
Lisadi's heart was in her throat as she tried to swallow. She ached
for the dear little girl. So young to have had to endure so much pain
and hardship.

"She's going to need some help at first, but children are resilient, and
heal pretty quickly. Dareera is over the worst of it, and the bones are
healing well." Mranek studied the woman. "She's going to need someone to
love her, she misses her mother and her home, and there have been a few
nightmares."

Lisadi's slight frown showed how much she felt for the young girl's
plight. "I will do my best to care for Dareera, Master Healer. I hear
she has an uncle. Has he visited her often?" Lisadi knew she would
give her all to care for Dareera, but could she love a child who was
not her own? That was something she would have to learn in time.

"He's been in every other day," Miranek said. "An Uncle isn't a father
though, he has to get to know her as much as she has to get to know him.
She was a little scared at first, he has a strong resemblance to her father
apparently."

"That could be a very good thing," Lisadi replied, **or it might only
make the child wish for her father more.** "I was told he'll be
setting up a room for her in the evenings. So, it appears she will be
spending time with both of us." Lisadi looked at the healer. "I am no
healer. How will I know if Dareera is in need of help again? Is there
anything in particular I should watch for?" Lisadi was worried that
she would miss some sign if the child's leg was not healing properly
or if something else would go wrong. Full-time care of a child was a
bit new to her still. She'd worked more in the nursery setting in the
past, where children were dropped off and picked up each day by their
parents. But Dareera didn't have parents any longer. Lisadi and the
uncle were all the girl had now.

"Her leg is splinted at the moment. But in the immediate future, well you'll
need to watch for signs of it reddening, or looking a funny colour, she may
run a temperature if the infection returns. Also, if she tells you something
isn't right, bring her here and the duty healer will check her over."

"Alright," she replied, mentally cataloging everything he'd told her.
"How long do you think she will have to wear the split for?" Lisadi
was having a hard time imagining how to keep a 4 turn old child still
if she had to wear a splint for long.

"At least another sevenday, if we were closer to the sea, I'd be in touch
with a dolphineer to get them to ask their partner to check whether the
bones have healed, but without that it takes time."

Lisadi nodded, "I understand. I can only imagine how difficult it can
be to keep a 4 turn old girl still enough to make sure the bones heal.
Is she allowed to walk on it at all until the split comes off? Or
should I plan to carry her for the time being?" Lisadi hoped the
little girl was not overly heavy if she was to carry her.

"Once she has the splint removed, she can walk a little, but not run for a
while. Her muscles will need to get used to being used again, and she may
feel tired and frustrated because she can't run about like other
youngsters."

"I understand. I'll do my best to make sure she doesn't push herself
to things too soon. Is there anything else you feel I should know?"
Lisadi wanted to make sure she was ready for anything.

"For the moment she's going top need a lot of love and understanding. She's
had a lot of change to deal with in a short time."

"Thank you Master Miranek." Lisadi nodded briefly, "May I see her now?"

"Yes, of course. " The healer got to his feet, "I'll have Devek show you to
her, she's taken a shine to him."

"Thank you Masterhealer," Lisadi said, leaving the office to go and
meet her new charge.
