Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 6 of Turn 5
The Wingleader had given G'nir a message to come see him in his office.
He was pleased to see that the bronzerider was on time, even if he were
not. "I'm sorry, the meeting went late. Please come in," U'kaiah said
as he pushed open the door.
"That's all right," G'nir replied, knowing well how those meetigns could
drag on.
"Please, have a seat," U'kaiah said with a wave towards the chair.
"There is a special duty I have you in mind for."
"Oh? What it is?" G'nir asked curiously. Special duty could mean either
good or bad.
"Lord Panret has requested a rider to convey him and his son to Red
Ridge Hold to meet the boy's perspective bride." Considering their
status and the nature of the trip, the implication was that only bronze
would do.
"Yes?" G'nir said.
"I'm afraid you will have to wait for them to finish, so it might be all
day. You will of course be excused from drills." To U'kaiah it didn't
seem like so much of an inconvenience since it would not be over the
rest day.
"Isn't there any younger bronzeriders available," G'nir asked. He had
had other plans for today. Of course he understood the Lord Holder's
need for transportation, being Lord Holder's son. And that's why it also
rankled to wait around for one, like some common drudge.
"I'm not sending a teenager to wait on a Lord Holder." G'nir really
should know better by now.
G'nir just sighed and run his fingers through his hair. "Do I know this
Lord Holder?" he asked.
Did the bronzerider really think U'kaiah could answer that for him? "I
don't know. Do you know Panret of Red Ridge?"
"Not very well," G'nir said scratcing his chin. He was familiar with the
name of course. He could list out all the South Lord holders and had
spent many candlemarks in his youth memorizing family trees.
"Well, there's your answer then, I suppose," U'kaiah said with a shrug,
looking through the hides on his desk to see just what needed to be done
now and what could wait a bit longer.
"I see," G'nir said, his eyes narrowing. Now that he was back to the
common rank, he was tasked to the menial, common tasks. Or so he felt.
Like people were trying to rub in that he was no longer wingleader.
"They have to take the time difference into account since the bride
lives rather far away, so you'll need to leave after lunch, which is
morning where she's at, I believe," if U'kaiah had timed it correctly.
"The Lord and his son should be ready by then. If not, of course, you
might have to wait. They only gave an approximate time."
"Of course," G'nir let out a frustrated sigh. How well he knew the
tricks of Lord Holders.
U'kaiah hadn't missed the displeased sound. "Something wrong, G'nir?"
"Frankly, I would have had better things to do today than be at beck and
call for a Lord Holder," the bronzerider shrugged.
The Wingleader fought the urge to roll his eyes as he picked up a hide
and put it to the side as a top priority. "Wouldn't we all, but someone
has to go, don't they. It's just your turn."
G'nir knew that now was not a time for confrontation. Basically, U'kaiah
had valid reasons for this assignment and G'nir just had to bear it.
"Yes, sir," he just said with a resigned sigh.
U'kaiah found the hide with all the details the bronzerider would need.
"Here you are, then. Safe flying."
"Thank you," G'nir received the hide and stood up in one fluid motion.
"Anything else?"
"No, you may leave," his Wingleader said, turning his full attention to
the hides on his desk, dismissing him as much with his actions as his
words.
G'nir walked out, fuming silently inside.
