Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 9, day 2 of Turn 5
"Sir, may I speak with you?" Erassa asked, crossing her hands in front
of her as she walked into his study.
"Well, of course you can, Erassa," Corowal replied with bemused tone and
put the side the Conclave-invitation.
She closed the door behind her and closed the distance between the door
and the desk. "Did you remember that Corofel's birthingday is this
month?"
"Yes, of course I did. I sent an order for his present a month ago,"
Corowal replied.
The corner of her lips curled into a smile. She thought he wouldn't
have forgotten. "But what shall we do about the day? Do you want to
have a party? Do you want to take him out of harper classes and spend
the day with him?" Any of his children would be happy at the thought of
a whole day with their father!
"I haven't set up my mind yet. Although there's going to be a cake,"
Corowal smiled. "And his favourite foods."
"Roast porcine sandwiches and tuber salad with chopped onions and no
pepper?" She didn't even have to hesitate.
"Yes, and bubblies for dessert," Corowal added.
"And cake," she reminded him. "Pineapple and citrus?" It would be
expensive, but she knew it was his favorite.
Corowal nodded, "The pineapple seems to be hard to get at this time of
Turn, but the kitchen staff is doing their best to get it."
"He'll be done with Harper classes soon," she said, finally voicing the
thought that had been running through her mind for the last few days.
Erassa wondered if Corowal still was considering sending his son to
foster elsewhere.
"That's when his training to Lord Holdership begins. It does include
being fostered elsewhere, so he gets experience of other places too,"
Corowal said.
She was learning to accept that it was his destiny, and therefore must
go. But shards it would be hard to see him go. "For how long?"
"Zathris and I have been talking about a Turn," Corowal said. Of course,
the plans tended to change. Even the beginning of the fosterage had been
postpone from the original plan.
A turn was better than his hole young adulthood, which she knew many
youngsters spent in different Holds in the hopes of forming alliances.
"And then he will come back?"
"That's the plan. Of course, lot can happen in meantime," Corowal said.
"Yes." The thought of him leaving made her sad. She had about as much
say in the situation as Corofel would have. "He won't leave when he's
still so young, surely."
"It's the prize of being Lord Holder's son," Corowal said gently.
"He didn't ask to be a Lord Holder's son, nor an heir to the title, not
to mention the fact that your family is still fairly new to _this_ Hold
despite the rank you hold," Erassa replied, not looking him in the eye.
Politics wasn't her business, but in her heart she felt Corofel was. "I
know he is your son, and you are the Lord Holder, but Corofel has had to
make a lot of adjustments in a very short time. He moved to this Hold,
he lost his mother, he gained a step-mother. I just want him to be
ready before the next big change in his life comes."
"So do I, and that's why his fosterage has been postponed. Originally,
he should had gone to the Amber hills a month ago," Corowal replied.
Thank Faranth for that, she thought with a long relieved sigh. She had
been half afraid he would send him away as soon as he was finished.
"Just, please, give him a bit more time," she said, though her look was
grateful that he had been considerate so far.
"I give him all the time I can afford," Corowal's voice was softly.
"Thank you." She felt better. He understood, and that was all she
needed to know. "Well, I will ask the kitchens to get on the menu for
his birthday."
"You do that," Corowal agreed.
"Thank you for your time, sir." She ducked her head and turned to leave
him to his work.
"Anytime, Erassa," Corowal replied and leaned backwards. It was very
interesting to him to notice how protective she had become towards his
children.
