G'nir

G'nir

"Evening, Weyrleader," G'nir greeted when he gained the other
bronzerider on his way to Dinning Cavern.

"G'nir," T'mahl said with a polite nod. "How goes it in Cyan Wing?"

"Just fine," G'nir said. He might not care about U'kaiah's personality,
but he found no fault in his leadership.

"I must say, I was very happy to hear that we would have a another
bronze transferring into Dragonsfall. Especially one with your
experience." Too often they seemed to be loosing them.

"This was coming back to home to me," G'nir said and grinned. "You have
to be fond of the place where you Impressed."

"I suppose that's true," T'mahl smiled, though he hadn't really felt so
attached to his home Weyr. At least not since he Impressed. "Do you
recognize many old faces?"

"Quite a few. It's also saddening to realize that there are faces that
are no longer with us," G'nir said seriously.

"Too man," the Weyrleader agreed. "Although, I have to say that things
have improved a great deal over the last few turns." T'mahl's fear of
facing Thread was lessening, and while there were still injuries and
deaths, it was nothing like the chaos he had remembered the few times he
had flown at the beginning of the Pass.

"Oh, yes. It's been a learning process for all of us," G'nir said.
Especially for him, who came from hold where the Thread's return had
been denied to the last (or till the very first Fall).

"Did you craft at all?" T'mahl asked curiously. He had not known G'nir
from his time at Dragonsfall, and so knew very little about the man.

"No, I didn't," G'nir replied. Shards, he still remember his first
months in Weyr. He had never ever even held a broom and then he was
expected to sweep the barracks! Talk about culture shock.

"What did you do before coming to the Weyr?"

"I was Lord Holder's son and about to marry a daughter of a wealthy
holder."

"Oh," the Weyrleader said, not knowing what else to say. This was
certainly a change of circumstance! "I'm surprised you chose to Stand."

"She was ugly, I was happy to escape that marriage," G'nir grinned.

T'mahl chuckled. "A life of adventure fighting Thread on a dragon or a
rich ugly wife. Not much choice, I suppose."

"I wouldn't switch Nirreth to the prettiest woman on Pern," G'nir said.

"The prettiest woman on Pern would probably have an even worse
personality than the ugliest." At least, that was T'mahl's experience.

"Based on my sisters, you're probably right," G'nir smiled.

The Weyrleader tried to smile, but there was very little true feeling
behind it. To him family was sacred, and it made him uncomfortable
hearing someone talk about their family in such a way with people they
barely knew. He decided to steer the subject in a safe direction.
"Yes, well, you're here now and we're all the better for it."

"Yes, I'm here," G'nir said, not making any comment about the last part
of his sentance.
