"What were you thinking? You endangered not only your own hide but also
hides of your wingmates?" G'nir asked angrily from a bluerider. "That
was down right reckless!"
The young bluerider's eyes grew wide as the bronzerider bore down on
him. "I'm not reckless!" he protested, taking a step back.
"In that case, you're just an idiot," the bronzerider replied.
Tears of frustration were actually rising to his eyes as P'tion objected
again. "I'm not an idiot! I thought we were practicing the other
formation is all!"
"Don't you pay any attention to all what's going on around you? Or were
your ears blocked? It was cleary told us before the drill what formation
we practise today."
"But I wasn't _there_ for the meeting!" the bluerider shouted back, the
tears falling down his face as his blue's eyes whirled with distress.
This caught the attention of the Wingleader, who had gone looking for
the boy to talk about what had happened. He was rather surprised to
G'nir standing over him. "What's all this?" U'kaiah asked looking from
one to the other.
"Who not?" G'nir managed to ask before the wingleader interrupted him.
"Didn't you notice what he was doing during the drills?" he asked
U'kaiah, his tone slightly incredulous.
"I did," the Wingleader replied, crossing his arms over his chest. He
knew all to well when he was being talked down to. "But what I'm not so
sure about it is what _you're_ doing."
"I'm trying to make him realize his mistake," G'nir replied calmly.
"I'm pretty sure P'tion realized his mistake without your help.
Kalamath relayed the message that he was in the wrong formation, and he
quickly corrected himself." U'kaiah's face and tone softened when he
looked at the bluerider. "I think you can go wash your face now,
P'tion. Will you be in the morning meeting tomorrow?"
"Yes, sir, I think so," the boy nodded, wiping his eyes with his sleeve.
"Good man," the Wingleader nodded. "If not, just let me know. You're
dismissed."
"Yes, sir." The bluerider shot G'nir a nasty look as he brushed past
him.
G'nir felt he was letting the boy off too easily and didn't hesitate to
voice it: "Just like that? You let him go too easily. At least he needs
few extra drills."
"That boy just received word that his mother died. Yes, I will let him
go that easily, and no, he does not need extra drills," U'kaiah growled
back. "But perhaps _you_ might so you can learn your place in this
wing, bronzerider!"
G'nir didn't reply. He just watched him, with his pale grey eyes.
Sometimes all you could do to keep the situation getting worse was to
keep your
mouth shut.
Well, that seemed to shut him up, U'kaiah thought with a satisfied nod.
"I wasn't made Wingleader of Cyan for my looks. I know how to lead, I
know when admonishment is warranted, and I know when a patience is
necessary. Next time leave the lecturing to me. Is that understood?"
"Yes, sir," the words was forced throught clenched teeth.
U'kaiah was liking G'nir less and less as he got to know him better. He
seemed to think that he was better than everyone else somehow. It gave
U'kaiah a perverse satisfaction to put him back in his place. "Good.
You're dismissed."
"Oh, thank you, wingleader," G'nir couldn't keep the sarcasm out of his
voice.
"You can thank me by standing an extra watch this rest day," U'kaiah
answered with an uncharacteristic scowl. He would not be spoken to that
way no matter what position a man might have once held. "If you go
quietly, I'll schedule you for only one. If you ever talk to me in that
tone again, I'll schedule you for the month, is that understood,
wingrider?"
"Yes, sir," the shorter the better.
U'kaiah had wondered that a Weyrleader might be so willing to lose a
Wingleader. G'nir was making the reason obvious. If he was not
careful, history just might repeat itself. "Then get out of my sight."
G'nir nodded and walked away, huffing under his breath.
