"Zathris?" Benani asked quietly as she watched her husband undress and
ready himself for bed. "I heard a rumor this afternoon, and I wondered if
you could verify it for me?"
"A rumour?" Zathris paused with his pants down and raised an eyebrow at
Benani. It wasn't like her to pay attention to rumours. Whatever she had
heard must have disturbed her to bring it up in such a serious tone.
"What's wrong?"
Benani watched her husband's face carfully as she spoke. "I was informed
by someone most reliable, that your friend Isily is pregnant."
Now that was news to Zathris as well and the surprise showed upon his
face. He kicked his pants off completely and reached for his night
clothes. "Really?"
"You wouldn't know anything about that would you?" Benani asked quietly.
"Especially considering the fact that she is currently without a husband?"
"She's not said anything about it to me at all." Isily, pregnant. Was it
just a rumour? She had said something about a man she had been seeing,
but Zathris had thought it had gotten cut off. Had they gotten back
together? Shards, she was in a hold that had a conservative Lord Holder
for many many turns. Zathris was a lot different, but his influence could
only do so much in so short a time. "Not a word."
Benani nodded. "Well then perhaps you should speak to her about it. If
she's not, I can help in squashing the talk. If she is, you'd best
arrange a marriage for her or else there could be problems."
"I'm not going to arrange a marriage for her." Zathris shook his head and
pulled his shirt over his head. "She's a grown woman, able to make
decisions for herself."
"Zathris." Benani said, a reproving look on her face. "She can't walk
around unmarried and be with child. This isn't a Weyr. Talk to her and
make her understand that she needs to wed the father."
"No, it's not a Weyr, but it's not my place to find her a husband,
either." Benaroy might have done something like that, but Zathris wasn't
him. "I'll suggest, but I can't force her to do anything."
Benani frowned. Now Zathris wasn't thinking clearly. "She's already
_chosen_ her husband. She just needs to marry him. Perhaps she's not the
one you need to speak to, perhaps you should talk to the man about his
responsibilities? How is she going to care for a child and craft at the
same time? She has no family here, no one to support her."
"I can't force her into that either. Granted, I think she and he _should_
be married, but why hasn't he yet? Yes, I think I will start with him
rather than her." No family, no support - that _would_ make things
difficult. "Well, no. I have to talk to her first as I don't know who he
is, but I'll find out." Zathris shook his head. It wasn't a good
position, especially not in a hold and really, it did look bad. "In the
morning."
She realized as she watched him climb into bed next to her, that they both
just assummed the rumor was true. She felt guilty for it, to believe so
readily something that will surely ruin the girl's reputation. Still, she
had heard it from Rana, and she wasn't one to pass things on that weren't
true. "In the morning then. If it's true, better to get things settled
sooner rather than later."
"In the morning." Zathris agreed. He slipped his arms around her, pulled
her close and nuzzled her hair. "We'll figure it out. Ah, nice. You're
a very good bedwarmer."
"I can warm more than the bed if you want me to." Benani let her hand
slip low in a teasing caress.
"Oh yes my dear." Zathris rumbled as his lips trailed over her ear. "I
want very much indeed."
