K'sedel

K'sedel

"So what do you think of that latest crop of weyrlings then?" K'sedel said as he poured himself some more wine.

"Looks like the usual mottley crew of young people," U'das replied.

"My granddaughters were disappointed not to be among them."

"Well, perhaps they have better luck nex time," U'das said. "The Sands looked very crowded."

"They were, but Zharesti felt a need to give the hatchlings as wide a choice as possible."

"Do you think she tad bit overdid it?" U'das asked. He could understand the want to have your Queen's hatchilings have the best possible options for riders. Zharesti's demand hadn't actully affected _his_ life in anyway, although as he had been weyrlingmaster in one point of his career, his symphaty was on the weyrlings Staff's side.

"It was her first hatching here," pointed out K'sedel. "I think that might have had something to do with it."

"I'm sure it does. Things should settle down now that all the eggs are hatched and Impressed," U'das said.

"The Weyrlingstaff seem happier now, at least." Or that was the impression that K'sedel had got from the last report he had seen. "they say that the class seem to be shaping up nicely."

"That's always nice to hear," U'das replied.

"I hear that lad who arrived from Dragonsfall impressed."

"Blue, it think, if you mean the one with orange-red hair," U'das said.

"That's the one I mean," the Weyrleader nodded. "And that woodcrafter lad got blue as well didn't he, I think Zharesti had him do some chores in her office, fixing shelves and things."

"Aye," U'das nodded.

"We'll just have to see what the Weyrlingmaster says about them in a month or two," K'sedel grinned. "That could be interesting."

"Probably wishes he had some other job," U'das murmured with amused tone.

"Either that or he'll be letting his second do most of the teaching while he finds a nice quiet spot to relax in the shade."

U'das nearly spit out his drink when he burst to laugh. "If he can dragg him out from infirmary," he remarked after he had recovered.

"It wasn't the same when we were Weyrlings, was it?" K'sedel said after a moment. "There wasn't such an urgency or seriousness about training."

"No, there wasn't. Mostly whe just hang around and took care of our dragons," U'das nodded.

"And now they know that it means they could die. no wonder some of them still want to have some fun while they can."

"Live now, for tomorrow may not come," U'das said. He was pretty sure it was quote from somewhere, but he couldn't remember where. Probably from some harper ballad.

"Something like that." K'sedel took another drink. "Maybe a handful of this class will be sat here in a good few turns saying the same things about another class."

"Mmm, yes," U'das nodded, drank from his own mug.

"Well if they are, it means they made it."

"Let's hope as many as possible makes it through," U'das replied.

"I'll agree with that."
