Date: month 6, day 18 of Turn 5
Imarre, now Im're, sat on his new bunk at the weyrling barracks and stared Gormth's sleeping form. The blue had curled himself around his enormous belly. The new weyrling knew he should change his blood stained white robe and go out to join the feast outside. But he didn't feel like celebrating. He felt like... well, crying.
M'galec was walking down the row of couches, making sure the dragonets were sleeping soundly while their lifemates celebrated with family and friends. He noticed the white robes standing out in the dim light and thought nothing of the straggler. But the closer he walked, he noticed the boy was making no attempt whatsoever to move. "Weyrling?" he asked softly when he was sure he was close enough to be heard without waking all the sleeping babes. "Is your lifemate having trouble settling in?"
"No, he's fine," Im're replied and hastily rubbed his eyes to hide the tears.
"Then is there another reason why you have not joined your Clutchmates?" The bronzerider could be surprisingly understanding at times, though he was only doing his duty by checking on the boy.
"I just don't feel like celebrating," Im're said. Although he really should go, hadn't he promised to his father to catch up? He just didn't feel like facing him and his biases again.
"You just Impressed a beautiful blue, boy. Why would you not wish to celebrate?" M'galec had a feeling he knew why. It wasn't uncommon for the Holdbred boys to have a problem with the color they Impressed.
"Because my father thinks I should have Impressed a bronze or brown. He thinks Gormth has wrong colour," Im're said. "Well, his colour is just right and perfect. He's beautiful!" defiance crept to his voice.
"He is. Perfectly suited to you. And, I think you knew that already." If the boy was the one the Weyrling staff at Dragonsfall had warned them about...
"Yes, I knew," Im're confirmed and reached to scratch the sleeping dragonet.
"So, it was just your father who did not know?" That could be rather awkward, M'galec was sure. He was certain his own father would have had trouble accepting anything other than a brown or bronze. Anything other than a bronze probably would have disappointed himself as well.
"He thinks blue- and greenriders are weird, so I haven't told him," Im're said.
"But he'll know now," the bronzerider said with an understanding nod. "And you do not want to face him?"
"No, I don't" Im're sighed. "This should be the greatest day in my life."
"Are you so sure he will be upset by your dragon? Some fathers will surprise you." Not often, but it was known to happen.
"He already met Gormth. He was disappointed," Im're said.
"Perhaps if I went with you and explained from a healer's point of view that you have no choice as to your sexual preferences," M'galec offered. Once it had been explained to him in that way, it had helped him accept homosexuals much more easily than when he first came to the Weyr.
For some reason, Im're couldn't imagine that helping at all. "Thank's for the offer, but no thank's," he said cautiously.
"All right. Still, I think you should join the party. You will need to eat at the very least, and this will be your last chance to relax for quite some time." From this night forward, the boy's entire life and priorities would be changed forever.
"All right, in a moment. I just pull myself together first," Im're promised and reached to scratch Gormth's sleeping form.
"I will wait for you. We can go together." That way the bronzerider could be sure the boy actually went and didn't hide away here. He would have to face the crowd eventually. Facing fear and overcoming difficulties was also part of being a dragonrider.
Im're nodded. He pulled the robe over his head and threw it to the laundry basket. He started to rummage around for his best tunic. He decided that the pants he already wore would do, they were clean and relatively new.
