G'nir needed to report in for his new Wingleader. Wingleader...it's been a while since he had one, _he_ had been the Wingleader who welcomed in the newcomers for a long time. It felt strange. On his way he tried to remember if he knew anything about this U'kaiah. The name didn't sound familiar. Before he left to the North, he had been Dragonsfall's rider, he had Searched and Impressed here. So, it was almost like coming home.
Almost, but not quite. The weyr had grown during the past decade and there was only few people left he could recognize there days.
"G'nir," U'kaiah smiled as the rider walked through his office door. "It's good to see you back among our ranks once more."
"It's nice to be back, sir," G'nir replied politely. He realized now, when he saw him, why he couldn't remember him. He was so much younger, that he must have been just a weyrbrat when he Impressed Nirreth.
"It's been a long time." G'nir certainly hadn't seemed to change that much, U'kaiah thought as he studied the bronzerider's face. He had only Impressed his Kalamath five turns after the older rider. There hadn't been that many bronzeriders then that they were hard to remember. At least in U'kaiah's mind.
"Time goes fast," G'nir said. Now, why was he chatting like old friends? G'nir had never really paid attention to the younger riders, liking to keep with his own generation.
"Certainly does," U'kaiah sighed, feeling rather nostalgic for many old faces that were no longer with them. "So few people who disappear from our lives actually make it back. L'has... Z'lok... Calbie..."
The older bronzerider did recongnize some of those names, but not all. He just nodded without word.
"So, have you settled in already? Did they give you your old weyr back?" Hopefully it was something a bit bigger than his old one!
"I got a new Weyr, the old one I had has another occupant," G'nir replied. And since he had said to the Headwoman that he sometimes had his child visiting him, he had gotten large Weyr with little alcove for Grilec when he came over. Who knew, maybe he would bring Rinnea to see the Weyr too.
"Probably too small anyway. So catch me up. Do you have a family now? New hobbies? It's been ages." U'kaiah was sure a lot had changed since they had last seen each other.
Obviously the younger bronzerider had met him some times ago, but G'nir still didn't remember him. "I have two children, no new hobbies and I've been Wingleader in Telgar for past five Turns," G'nir said, too polite to refuse the answer, but he was getting impatient. He just wanted his wing placement and schedule.
"I have a son myself. Can you imagine?" He shook his head with a wry smile. "I'm probably one of the last people you'd expect to be a happy father, eh? Took some getting used to at first, but I love the Hatchling."
"Aren't we all? Look, I would like to hear what will be my place in wing formation. Left flank or right? And the schedule of course, and what formation you currently use," Impatience was now evident in his voice.
Well, that was... short. "I can give you a schedule and a rough formation, but we're going to have to fit you into my wing. Considering I just heard that you were transferring in, I can't tell you exactly where your place will be yet. I suppose that's something I'll have to work out in drills." If U'kaiah didn't know better, it seemed G'nir wasn't quite as happy to see him. "Tell me, why did you come back from Telgar? It seems things were going well for you there."
"The Weyrleader and I didn't see things in a same way," G'nir replied, his tone implying a serious disagreement. It still rankled. Some people just didn't know how to handle power. Forcing him to transfer was both petty and pointless. They lost a good Wingleader.
U'kaiah's eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at the bronzerider. That sounded troubling. "Have you met our Weyrleader yet?"
"Yes," the older bronzerider replied.
"And how did you find him?" The Wingleader was curious, especially since he had very little use for the man as a Weyrleader. If G'nir had trouble at Telgar, certainly here would not be much easier.
"He seemed like a decent man. I reserve from further judgement until I see him in action," G'nir said.
U'kaiah smiled, though he wondered if G'nir just might end up with the same troubles here at Dragonsfall. "Well, in any case, it's good to have you back. I'm sure you'll want to be settling in, so I will get you the schedule."
"Thank you," G'nir said. So, he wanted to be buddies with his underlings, the older bronzerider deducted. Well, that didn't necessary make you a bad leader, so he would wait and see before forming his final opinion of his new Wingleader.
