Briata

Briata

Briata took a deep breath and let it out slowly. The hatching was going to be that day. She could tell. It was time, but beyond that there was something in the air. The dragons knew, though they had only just started humming. She wasn't going to be among the candidates on those hot sands, though. Despite Zharesti's proclamation, she was not going to Stand.

The sight of a certain bronzerider caught her eye. A small smile flitted to Briata's mouth and she moved to his side. "Hello B'lamick." Her glance darted over to the people who were hurrying toward the hatching cavern. They were the only ones who weren't joining the throng.

"I was looking for you." B'lamick said with relief. "The Hatching will be soon and I've got to go pick up guests."

"Ah yes, I'm sorry." Briata hadn't meant to make B'lamick late. "Why don't you just drop me off at one of the places you're picking up guests. That way you won't have to take me somewhere only to have to go somewhere else."

"Oh I've _time_ for all of it." B'lamick said with a grin. "Besides, I don't want you to have to spend the day at some strange cothold. I'll give you your pick, the beach or the Healer Hall? Or anywhere else you'd prefer actually, I know a wide assortment of pleasant visuals."

"Why don't you surprise me?" Briata suggested as she made her way to the large bronze waiting for her. She fastened her jacket and Jewel's tail tightened around her neck. "Are you going to watch the hatching?"

B'lamick helped her up onto Latarth and then quickly climbed behind her, "I don't know, do I have someplace better to be?"

"I guess not." Briata did wish she could have some company, but if B'lamick wanted to see the hatching, she wouldn't ask B'lamick to be that company. She supposed she could have gone back to her Father's hold, but for some reason, Briata didn't really feel like going there, not to hide anyway. "You'll have to tell me all about it after it's over." The straps were secure, and soon they would leave the Weyr behind - for a little while anyway.

He felt bad, he didn't want to leave her alone, but he also really wanted to go to the hatching. "I wonder if Latarth can talk to you from so far away? Have you ever tried to talk to a dragon from any sort of distance?"

"No, it's not something I've ever thought of trying." When she was at the hold, it just hadn't occurred to her. At the Weyr, there was a constant stream of dragons so she hadn't felt a need. "I could try, though."

"Well, I was just thinking that maybe Latarth could give you a a sort of play by play and let you know what was happening." B'lamick explained as he checked to make sure she was strapped in. "That way you wouldn't feel like you were missing it. If you can hear him that far away that is."

"I can try. We'll see." That could be interesting. If Briata closed her eyes, she might even be able to see what Latarth saw. He could send her images, it would almost be like she was there. It wasn't quite the same but...well, Briata just didn't want to take the chance that Zharesti might still try to force her to Stand. It was better to be out of sight. "If nothing else, it will be an interesting experiment."

"So where to then?" B'lamick said as Latarth raised high into the sky. He felt better knowing that he wasn't abandoning her completely, and he was looking forward to the hatching. Despite the forced standings, he had several friends that were hoping that they would be chosen by the new dragonets and he wanted to be there to support them.

"Somewhere. Somewhere nice to visit. You choose." A surprise could be fun, and Briata could find ways to entertain herself, especially if she was able to still communicate with Latarth.

B'lamick still didn't like the idea of dropping her off at some deserted beach. "How about a visit to the Healer Hall? My father would love to see you again."

"That sounds fine." B'lamick's father was pleasant. Conversing with him would mean she'd not be able to pay as full attention to Latarth, but it would still be a pleasant way to spend a day. "He's a good chap."

He didn't think she sounded enthusiastic, but without her offering an alternative, he'd rather put her someplace he knew would be safe. "Last chance for you to pick?"

Briata laughed. "No, spending time with your father actually sounds like a pleasant way to go through the day. I think it's a splendid suggestion, so please take me there."
