Benani looked out her sitting room window, the gather square visible now that the leaves had finally fallen off the trees. It was cold outside, too cold for a walk though she loved to take them. Peeking up at the clouds she wondered if it would snow soon. The snow that had fallen last sevenday had melted quickly, but now, with the air as cold as it was, it would probably stick around. The latch to the door clicked and she turned around in time to see Zathris walk in, pulling his riding jacket off as he entered the warmer room.
"There you are." Benani walked over and took the jacket from him, hanging it on the rack not far away. "I missed you."
"Did you now?" Zathris pulled back the cuffs of his sleeves and grinned at his wife. "And why would you miss me? I would think you'd be tired of me by now."
"I'll never be tired of you." Benani assured him as she wrapped her arms around him and leaned into his chest. "You're stuck with me."
"I'll have to remind you that you said that fifty turns from now." Zathris kissed her then squeezed her gently. "Did you have a good day?"
Benani nodded. "Very nice. How did your meeting with the Lord of Emerald Falls go?"
"It went well." Pleasant, in fact. Hopefully the agreement would benefit both holds. "It looks like we'll be taking on both of the boys. How's that for a handful, eh?"
She looked up, surprise evident on her face. "Both of them? Why?"
"Thinks it might be easier on them. They'll already be adjusting to a new place." Zathris pulled out of her embrace mainly to move them both over to a couch. "That doesn't mean they'll both stay, but we'll see how things go."
Benani put on a thoughtful face, "Who will you send to Emerald Falls then?"
"What about one of Benaran's sons?" Zathris hadn't really spoken to Benaran, but it was a thought he had mulled over. "Corowal and I haven't spoken about who to send in return yet so we have a bit of time."
"We could send one of the girls too." she suggested. "There are several of the blood nearing marriage age."
"True, though I don't plan on arranging any marriages. Still, they might meet someone." Zathris was quite a bit more liberal than most might think him. It hadn't caused any issues as of yet, but Zathris was certain it would eventually. "There's Royan's twins."
"Maybe." Though Benani didn't think that Royan would want his girls sent to foster without a male of the blood to watch over them. She could be wrong though. "I suppose you're going to need to talk to my brothers about it. See who is interested."
"Oh yes, nothing will be decided before we discuss it. Besides, the girls may not be interested in going either." Even if their fathers wanted them to, Zathris wasn't going to force them. "Think we'll be able to handle two young men?"
Benani nodded. "I'm sure it'll be fine. They're old enough to take care of themselves mostly."
"I have a feeling I'll be dealing with them as much if not more than you. I'll try to keep them out of your hair." Not that Zathris expected the boys to be trouble. Even if they were, he'd keep them busy so they wouldn't have time to get into trouble.
She laughed, "I'm pretty sure you'll be begging me to get them out of _your_ hair. They won't be spending much time learning how to sew or rationing out supplies. They'll be with you learning Hold practicalities."
"I could always send them off with one of the assistant stewards." Zathris still hadn't decided on a Steward. There were a couple of Stewards who were promising, though, but he was taking his time.
"See, they won't be any problem." She assured him. It wasn't as if they would be the only young people in the Hold. The place was full of them. "Now enough talk. You remember what the next few days are, we have work to do."
"Oh woe is me, how am I going to be able to get through the next few days." Zathris groaned, but he was unable to make it sound convincing at all. "This is going to be the death of me."
Benani playfully slapped his chest before untangling herself from his arms and walking towards the bedroom. "Come on now, we've our own future fosterling to make."
"Fosterling? I don't think so, I'm going to keep my children all to myself." Zathris pushed himself to a stand and darted after her. "All mine. Just like you."
