Description: Corowal and Zathris discuss the details of fostering.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 6, day 2 of Turn 5
Corowal had sent Lord Zathris letters concerning the possibility of fostering one of his sons (Corofel or Ofewal, he hadn't even decided yet which one) in Amber Hills Hold. Such connection could strengthen the relationship between both holds. Not to mention the son in question would to see more of Pern, how other hold's were run and maybe form friendships that would latter grow into useful alliances. "Lord Corowal." Zathris offered his hand as he offered it the other Lord Holder. He had been sure to come out and greet Corowal as he arrived. "It is a pleasure to have you here!
"Thank you, Lord Zathris," Corowal greeted the younger man and eyed him curiously. So this was the one he had helped to elevate to his current status.
"Please, come, let's get you comfortable and then we can begin discussions." Zathris motioned for Lord Corowal to walk alongside of him. "Is there anything you would care to eat or drink?"
"A hot klah would do good after the trip here," Corowal replied.
"Certainly, certainly." Zathris led the way through the halls and toward his quarters. "I trust your trip here was uneventful?"
"I'm not so used to fly across Pern yet, that I would call it uneventful. It's always so exhilarating to see the world from above," Corowal said with a smile.
Zathris grinned. "It's the only way to travel." He paused long enough to catch a passing drudge and request klah to be sent to his quarters. Zathris then led Corowal down the hallway and opened a door. "Come in and sit down
- the klah won't be long."
"Thank you," Corowal nodded. He took the offered seat. "So, how are things at the Amber Hills?"
"Actually, going quite well." Zathris settled down in a chair opposite of Corowal. "It's been an adjustment, to be sure, but I think my position of Assistant Steward helped in the transition."
"Were people very upset when Benaroy's own sons were passed?" Corowal asked curiously.
"There were some, yes." Zathris could tell even from those who had tried their best to hide it. "Strangely enough, the one who I thought might be the most upset wasn't - Nimroy."
"Life's little surprises," Corowal remarked. "I originally came to Emerald Falls Hold to be the Steward, but ended up taking over and replacing my cousin."
Zathris nodded slowly. "I never aspired to be Lord of Amber Hills, it just happened. Strange how life goes sometimes, eh?" Zathris looked up as a drudge entered with a tray of steaming claw and a few biscuits. "Thank you." He stated politely, then dismissed the young woman. Zathris himself poured the klah from its flask into a mug and passed that mug to Corowal before pouring one for himself. "You said you had a proposition regarding your son?"
"Yes, I need to foster him out for a while," Corowal replied with sad sigh. "You know how it is, spent time elsewhere, learn how they do business, make alliances."
"Ah yes, I'm very familiar with that." Zathris had been fostered out himself - it was how he had managed to get acquainted with Willow Bend. "Which son do you wish to foster?"
"Well, that's the problem, I can't decide. Both Corofel and Ofewal are old enough," Corowal replied with apologetic expression.
"What do they think about it?" Zathris asked, eyebrow raised. Was he only going to foster one son? Surely he'd foster the other as well, wouldn't he
"Neither is very pleased about the idea, " Corowal said.
"Really?" Zathris himself had been keen to foster, but perhaps his situation had been quite different. "Have they expressed why they are not?"
"They lost their mother a Turn and half ago. Especially Corofel views it as a punishment, since he have tendency of getting into trouble," Corowal grinned. "Like me as a child. Ofewal, on the other hand, has always been physically weak and is often sick, he worries he won't manage away from home."
"I see." Both boys had their issues and they would be a challenge. Would Benani be up for it? She lovedchildren and had even mentioned the possibility of fostering both. "I would be happy to take on one or bothof the boys if you so desire. We'll do everything we can to make them feel comfortable and useful."
Corowal nodded. "If you take both, they would have each other for company and safety," he mused. The thought actually just now occurred to him, after Zathris's hint.
"That can certainly be arranged." Two instead of one, Benani wouldn't mind. Zathris could teach them about the runnings of the hold, find out their interests, put them to work and help cultivate them. "We'd be glad to have both of them. It might make the transition easier as well."
"Yes, it would. So, what would be the best time for you?" Corowal agreed and asked.
"How about the beginning of the next month?" Zathris suggested. It would give the boys a little time to get used to the idea and to pack. Not a huge amount of time, but some, then again, Corowal might want more time than that. "Or would you want more time to prepare?"
"That sounds good to me. Do you mind if I bring them personally?" Corowal asked.
"Of course not, you are always welcome here. Bring the rest of the family too if you like - you can make a trip of it." Children and Ladies often got left behind. Zathris hoped that Benani would be able to go with him on at least some of the trips he would surely take in the future.
"That would be fun. I'm sure Felyna would love to meet Benani," Corowal said.
"Best be careful." Zathris' smile turned into a grin. "We don't want those two to get into trouble."
Corowal just grinned back. Zathris seemed like a likable man and seemed like they could work well together.
