"It'll be that time again," K'sedel said to his sons. Having taken advantage of the rest day, K'deren had brought his children to see their grandfather, and K'reyel had joined them. The family group were on the beach, the children splashing in the shallows with Reyela and Rondera watching over the little ones.

"You mean there are eggs on the sands?" asked K'deren. "I heard about the call for candidates, I told Rondera it was her choice to make, whether she wanted to come here, or wait for a clutch at Dolphin Cove."

"Reyela will be out there," commented K'reyel. "She wants to carry on the tradition of Impression in our family."

"Not everyone is lucky enough," commented their father, his thoughts drifting to Meree briefly. She'd never impressed and nor had Meredel or Akessa. And standing hadn't even crossed his mind until after the plague when he'd returned to his birth place to be with his father. If the plague hadn't come, well the knots he wore might well have been those of a Master Crafter, not a Weyrleader.

"Meredel said she was happy with her craft, and she loves having the Harper Hall so close. I did offer to bring her today, but she said she needed to work on something with one of the hall based harpers. Something to do with making a new gitar." K'deren grinned. "I think it's because Kedon muttered something about wanting to learn how to play the other day in her hearing."

K'reyel grinned, "So we'll see how long he sticks with it and how long his foster parents put up with it."

"It could be worse," K'sedel said. "What if it was drums he was after?"

"Don't tempt him, or, or else I'll get a toy drum for Radela and you can see how musical she is!" It was only a mock threat from K'deren, and his tone gave that away.

"Ciara's a harper too, she might encourage it." K'reyel couldn't resist chiming in. "Good job Mayel is too young to do more than crawl around after spinners and trundle bugs!"

"Be ever so careful what you ask for boys," their father warned. "One day it will come back to remind you about what you said."

K'deren changed the subject, "If Rondera comes here, will you watch out for her?" It was suddenly serious, but he knew as well as any of them the dangers involved in riding. The loss of Vonalie had brought that home in the hardest way possible; given that Deralie was now growing up without her mother. Given that this was a pass, she would not be the only child who lost a parent, but Deralie would not remember her at all, which hurt.

"You know I will, you think she'd want to let her grandfather down?" K'sedel said.

"You don't want to worry about Dad." K'reyel said, a grin on his face. "Or even me, what about R'sedel corrupting her?"

"Like I'd let him," K'sedel said. "Although he may be out bringing in more candidates to corrupt her. Say what you like, but that green of his is a perfect search dragon."

"She is indeed," K'reyel said.

It was a known fact that the two men didn't get on too well, K'sedel had separated them more than once and it seemed he had been doing so ever since they were small. In fact there was one time he'd been glad nobody had been around to see the two men disagreeing. Whatever it was between them had been simmering for turns and probably would simmer on for the rest of the pass. Some people seemed destined to never get along, and he feared those two were like that. Still it was praise a least for his son's dragon, maybe he could carefully tell R'sedel what had been said.

"Da!" came a call from the youngest members.

"I'm tired," Radela said.

"Do you want to go inside?" asked her father.

The child nodded. "Perhaps we should all make a move," suggested K'sedel.

"You could be right," K'deren said as Deralie came over to him, closely followed by Rondera and Kedon and K'reyel's girls with their brother.
