K'mai

K'mai

~*~ flashback/memory ~*~
Uetia stood frozen behind the corner, listening male voices talking,
talking about _her_ . She recognized the voices, they were all fellow
apprentices.

"You should try out Uetia, she is ugly as a wherry which makes her
desperate for liiitle looving," his drawling, contemtious voice was
like a stab to her heart. Thoughts twirled in her head. Now she
understood, she was nothing to him but a score in a point card, a
conquest, challenge. First he had sieged her for months, charming and
friendly, telling her that looks meant nothing. She had fallen for
him. After they had been together and she had given up her virtue to
him, he had turned his back to her and acted cold and indifferent.
"She just begs to be bedded."

Her heartbroke was turning into a hate. She wanted to march on them
and bash his face in. Turn that handsome face with it's leasury grin
into a bloody mess. Instead she turned around and walked away,
blinking away the tears.

Uetia felt a weight on her, warm, suffocating. She showed it off from
her, screaming: "Gerr off me you slime!" Her eyes had a wild look and
it was obvious that her mind wasn't in the current moment.

"Whoa!" K'mai clambered to the far side of the bed. "Hey, hey! Calm
down!" It was rather unflattering, but it wasn't the first time
someone had a bad reaction after a flight. From repressed greenboys to
abused women, K'mai had seen quite a range.

For a moment, Uetia didn't recongnize him and couldn't remember why
she was in bed with him. Then mind flooded back with memories. The
feral look in her face disappeared and was replaced with embarrassed
one. "I'm sorry, K'mai. Sirjath had a mating flight, didn't she?" she
said with small voice.

"Yes ..." His instinct was to joke, but he had to tread lightly here.
"Did it stir up some bad memories?"

"Yes," Uetia's reply was short one. She rubbed her face and tried to
banisht that memory. His voice...it had been so full of contempt. She
had always been a large sized girl, but back then, for first time of
her life, she had felt small and insignificant. Her brother's had
sometimes teased, sometime fought with her, but there had always been
love beneath it and they had never dismissed her like that. Like she
wasn't even a person.

"Is there anything I can help with? I wasn't ... too rough, was I?" He
frowned in concern.

"No, it's not that," Uetia said. She shook herself like a canine in
attempt to get rid of the memory. "I was basically seduced, used and
then dumped when I was apprentice," she said rather bluntly.

K'mai was a little relieved. Not that what happened to her wasn't bad,
but he'd been worried it was something worse. "Some people can be such
tunnelsnakes."

"Yeah, and I was so young and naive to believe someone would love me
despite my looks," Uetia said.

"Well, now. That's a little harsh." K'mai shifted a little closer and
stretched out his legs. "Just because that _one_ man didn't love you
doesn't mean no one will."

Uetia just shrugged.

"Hmm ... I can't say much about love, but I can say I didn't mind
waking up next to you." He smiled a little. "Except for the part where
you called me slime."

"Hey, it wasn't you I was calling slime, it was him," Uetia said,
humour returning to her. K'mai seem to have a way to stroke peoples
self-esteem. No wonder he was so popular among greenriders, of both
gender.

"It's supposed to make me feel better that you can't tell the
difference between us?"

"Yes?" Uetia's voice showed her uncertainity.

"Hmm. Was he really as handsome as me?" He tilted his head.

"Hard to say," Uetia shrugged.

"Hard to say?" K'mai repeated. He pouted for a moment, then his
expression lightened. "Uetia," he inched closer. "What could I do to
make sure you don't mix us up again?"

"Leave me alone," Uetia suggested with coldness in her eyes.

"Was it really that bad?" He frowned. "This was your first flight, wasn't
it?"

"It was," Uetia said. "I felt like some object, not person at all. Did
anyone of you even notice who I was?" she rubbed her arms.

"I noticed. I admit that I didn't notice all that much, but I at least
knew it was you," he said. "Flights are about your dragon, but I still
think you should enjoy being along for the ride."

"Maybe I'll learn that with time, but now, I would like to enjoy long,
hot soak in bathing pool," Uetia said.

K'mai didn't understand why someone would want to shrug off a flight
like that. "Then I need to go find a friend. It was a lovely flight, Uetia.
Sirjath made the right choice."

"Well, I had to admit that it wasn't that bad," Uetia said half reclutantly.

"That's something, at least."
