Characters: U'kaiah, Kamalia
Description: Kamalia asks U'kaiah if he will help her get some experience before her green rises and (of course) he says yes.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 1 of Turn 5
Notes: Mentioned: Isele (NPC)
Isele's green had risen earlier in the day, making her the second in the
clutch to have her first mating flight. Kamalia knew she was stupid for
having waited so long to get experience, but she had been so busy with
the other parts of training and now it was almost too late and she
didn't feel ready. Worry for what could happen if she lost control
during Alaudath's flight was the only thing that propelled her forward
to the first person she had thought of when, as Eloreth blooded a
wherry, she had decided that she needed to act that very day to prepare
herself.
There he was at the Weyrlake, where Alaudath had said he would be. She
had let her green bespeak the bronze to make sure he wasn't busy and so
he would know she was coming. She irrationally hoped he had already
guessed why she was walking across the sands surrounding Weyrlake to
him.
"Hi." She stopped a few feet from the bronzerider. Now that she
was there, her courage left her.
"Well, hello there," the bronzerider smiled as he ran his towel through
his short black curls one more time. "Kalamath said you'd be coming to
find me."
"Yes. But if you're busy..." Part of her hoped he would suddenly
remember he had to be somewhere so she could leave without making
a fool of herself.
"No, I was just taking a swim. I had enough anyway." He took in
another big breath and let it out in a woosh. "So..."
Shards this was awkward. "Well," she stopped and started again, "So,
I'm a senior weyrling now. And, two of Alaudath's clutchmates have
already had their first mating flights." **Please please understand
what I'm hinting at,** her eyes pleaded with him even as she blushed.
U'kaiah could put all the signs together. Looking in the Record Room
for information about Flights, talking about being a senior weyrling,
and that telling blush... "Ah." He said with an understanding nod.
"So... Do you want me to help you meet someone, or do you want... me."
"You," she said softly, the word almost coming out as a question. She
thought she would be relieved when he knew but she still felt a knot
in her stomach.
"Sure," he replied without hesitation. U'kaiah had helped his fair
share of weyrlings in a similar situation, and she seemed like a nice
kid. Nervous, but that was to be expected. "Do you mind me asking just
how much experience you have now?" he asked, his voice lowered so she
could feel their conversation was private.
Her anxiety eased a bit at his acceptance. He didn't seem reluctant at
all. "Hardly at all," she admitted. "Just some kissing."
"Recently?" Some kissing could mean a couple youngsters in Harpers
class daring each other to kiss on the lips and then run away. He had
played that game himself as a boy.
"A little before the Hatching," Kamalia replied, remembering the
furtive kiss in the hallway with a fellow candidate. He hadn't
Impressed and she had hardly seen him since.
"And how do you feel about this?" He knew she was not from the Weyr.
Some Holdbred girls accepted their duty to sleep with someone before
their first Flight as just a matter of fact, others embraced the freedom
of the Weyr whole-hearted, and others had a bit of a harder time. "Are
you nervous? Excited?" It was better to know just where her mindset
would be.
He was certainly thorough in his questioning, but she took his lead and
tried to think impartially of her own feelings. "Both. I'm looking
forward to it, but don't quite know what to expect." It was one thing
to hear stories, many exaggerated, from other greenriders and quite
another to experience everything herself.
"Well, your green doesn't seem to be proddy. We could take an evening
and get to know each other a little better if you like." Some girls
liked to just get it over with, but others wanted to take these things
in steps. He didn't want her to feel rushed into anything she wasn't
ready for.
"That would be nice." It was more than she had expected. "And,
you'll definitely be able to tell before she rises?" Alaudath didn't
seemed proddy, but since this was the first time, she wasn't sure.
"I probably won't know," the bronzerider admitted. "But there are
signs. I think you'll be able to tell. You'll probably feel more
moody, and just before she rises she'll change color. Every green is
different, so I can't tell you how much of a warning you'll get. But
when a green reaches maturity, the males seem to know and start paying
her more attention. I don't think she's going to rise tomorrow or
anything."
"Ok, good." That meant that she didn't have to feel too rushed.
They had been taught to look for signs of proddiness, but there were
stories of greens rising without any warning at all.
"Let's have dinner in my room then," the bronzerider suggested. It was
a good way to ease into the whole thing. "Do you like wine?"
"If it's sweet." A romantic dinner with U'kaiah, and then... She could
barely believe it.
"I think I could find something for you. I'm going to need to take a
quick dip in the bathing pool, if it's ok." It would also give him time
to throw his dirty laundry in the closet and try to make his room look a
bit more presentable. "I can have Kalamath bespeak Alaudath at, say the
eighteenth candlemark?"
"Ok." That would give her time to get clean as well. And decide what
to wear.
"Great. See you then," he smiled, picking up his shirt from the sand.
