K'reyel

K'reyel

The dragonrider wore knots with a strand of blue; he was tall and slim
and had his riding jacket slung over one arm, with both hands on his
hips. He was surveying the Star Stones, or perhaps the entrance to the
Weyrwoman's weyr. It was less likely, but not impossible, that he was
studying the gold dragon sunning herself on the sandy soil in front of
the huge weyr she would retreat into during the heat of the day.

Being exceptionally slim for a gold Veyeth looked as is she would clutch
within the next dozen heartbeats but in fact had almost a sevenday to
go. Her tail twitched in the sand but she gave no other indication that
she was aware of the bluerider's scrutiny.

"Can I help you bluerider?" asked the Wingsecond politely as he noticed
the bluerider. K'reyel had a pile of hides in his hands to be taken to
the records room.

J'zherin glanced at the bronzerider - then looked again. He knew the
man by sight and name, but had never met him. These days it was
Wingsecond knots at his shoulder, but not so long ago it had been
Weyrleader knots and River Bluff's colours. "J'zherin." He held out
his hand to the other man, then shrugged as he noticed the hides. "I'm
visiting," he added with a nod toward the Weywoman's office door. "I
don't know why people comment about greens - gold dragons just have to
be the most fickle creatures about, don't you think?"

"They can be," agreed K'reyel. "I'm K'reyel, you must be a relative of
the Weyrwoman?"

J'zherin was used to being recognised by those who knew his mother. He
had the same distinctive dark slanted eyes above broad, prominent
cheekbones, and that his curls were dark where hers were sandy didn't
disguise the likeness much at all. "Indeed. And you're the son of the
current Weyrleader, and the most recent Weyrleader before that."
J'zherin shook his head. "What a way to decide leadership."

"They say the dragons know best. And it must be true, or else neither
of us would have these knots we wear." K'reyel paused, "I'm sorry, I
must sound like I'm talking to my children, not a fellow rider."

"Being lectured doesn't worry me; it's my lot in life as a bluerider.
And as one of Zharesti's boys. I don't know why but people always
thought my brother and I should be better behaved than all the other
weyrbrats. Was your father Weyrleader when you were younger?"

"Wingleader, not that it meant quite so much before the pass. But yes,
they did look at me and my brothers and sisters as though we should be
some sort of example."

The bluerider nodded. "The worst of it with Zharesti is that she's not
always that good an example herself," he said with a smile the lit his
face and only increased his likeness to his mother. "Too much character
for that."

"We've noticed, she can be rather..." K'reyel paused to think of an
appropriate word. "Determined. Don't you think?"

"Think? I _know_. And as much as I'd like to say it was a goldrider's
fate to be like that, I think she would have been the same whether she'd
Impressed or not. Isn't your father determined? Is that how you'd
describe him?"

"Perhaps I would, but he's mellowed over the turns. His new weyrmate has
been good for him."

"Mmm. Perhaps I should organise something like that for my mother."
J'zherin laughed at the thought. Zharesti would have his hide for notes
before she let him interfere with her life and, in all honesty, after
the bitterness had passed she seemed happier without a weyrmate. Or
perhaps it was just happier without his father as her weyrmate.

"Well you never know what might happen in the future."

"Ahh well. I'd better get in and see her - and let you get about your
business. You're Wingsecond for your father now, I think I heard?"

"Truth be told I prefer that, it gives me more time with my weyrmate and
our son. Only got half the hides to deal with now."

"Well I've got none of those things to worry about, as yet, for which I
thank the pretty blue hide of my lifemate every day." He sketched a
salute at the other man. "I'm off to report in to the Weyrwoman. Wish
me luck."

"Good luck J'zherin," K'reyel told him as he balance the hides to return
the salute briefly. "I'm sure your mother will only be too pleased to
see you."

"I'll find out soon enough," the bluerider muttered, heading resolutely
toward the open office door and his mother, the new Weyrwoman.
