Briata

Briata

It was hot. Very hot. Yet the children didn't seem to mind it at all. A group of the women who worked in the creche had taken a group of the children and gone to the lake. Probably because the children were stir crazy, but they all had to suffer in the heat. Of course, the children didn't seem to mind, especially since they would happily splash into the water to cool down. They had taken some of the older children, ones who could swim. They were taking advantage of it too. The creels of laughter made it apparent they were enjoying the time outdoors.

Briata's charges were not swimming. They would get up and dash in and out of the water to cool down, only to come right back and continue their work on the large Weyr they were constructing from sand. Briata was dressed appropriately for swimming, though hers was more modest than most women of the Weyr sported. She, however, was not like most women of the Weyr. She sat on a boulder that was near the water's edge, the liquid lapping at its base and her feet as she watched the children.

"Well hello Briata." B'lamick said with a grin as he recognized the girl. He was suddenly glad he'd decided to walk across to the dock instead of waking Latarth to give him a lift. Even if it was horribly hot.

Briata turned and she responded to B'lamick's grin with a smile. "Hello B'lamick." She reached down to splash some water on herself, then straightened. "How are you?"

"Hot, you've got the right idea." the bronzerider looked around at all the weyrbrats swimming and splashing in the cool water. "You got stuck with creche duty?"

"I enjoy it." Briata's tone was only lightly reproachful. Most men didn't have a sense for children who weren't their own. "Some of the children were going stir crazy, so we decided to brave the heat."

B'lamick tried to backtrack. "I didn't mean it wasn't a necessary job, it's just that with your background, I would have thought the Headwoman might appreciate you as an assistant is all."

"Perhaps she doesn't need an assistant." Briata certainly wasn't going to suggest she be a candidate for one. "Besides, I've been giving some thought to apprenticing."

It made sense, unless she had dragonrider dreams, for her to try a craft now that she'd chosen to leave the Hold life. "Where at? Not that I'm biased or anything, but Healing is the way to go." he tapped his apprentice healer cords to emphasise it.

Briata's lips tickled at his obvious endorsement. "Actually, I was thinking of the Weavercraft." It was what she would have done had she not wanted a family. Since she couldn't have the family she wanted, she might as well, right? "I'm decent at sewing and my embroidery is passable."

"Oh," B'lamick effected more disappointment than he actually felt. "That's okay too I suppose."

"I don't know if I could handle being a healer." Briata let her eyes follow one of the children as the girl ran into the water, splashed around, then headed back to the hold which was getting larger by the moment. "Emotionally, I mean."

B'lamick shrugged, he knew what she meant, but he'd always tried not to dwell on that part of it. He decided to change the subject. "Hey, when Latarth wakes up, I was gonna give him a bath. Do you think the kids would like it if I brought him down here?"

"You'd probably be their favourite dragonrider in the Weyr." Briata had always thought that the awe of dragons would not be as great by the residents of the Weyr. While to an extent it was true, but most of the people, at least the children anyway, were simply captivated by the wondrous beasts.

"Okay, I'll be back later then." B'lamick exclaimed as he pointed towards the craft buildings on the far side of the lake. "I've got an errand to run first."

"We'll be here until a half hour before lunch time." Then they would gather the children, dry up and head to the dining hall. After that, Briata wouldn't be there, but neither would the children.

Latarth would probably sleep until past then if B'lamick let him, but he'd wake the big lug up for Briata. "Okay, I won't be too long then."

Briata watched B'lamick's retreating back. He seemed a nice sort, a little more forward than T'vanen, but just as sweet. She didn't let her gaze linger, though, the children taking her attention.
