There was so much stuff in the storage. The piles, some of which were as tall as she or taller, jutted out like oddly shaped walls. Briata had to move around them makeshift path of boxes to the back where most of the furniture was located. The greeting was a foul one. The stench of dust stung her nose and she sneezed, the action merely making the ache in her head more pronounced. The voices were there, chittering chattering, constantly going. The volume ebbed and flowed, her control still tedious at best. Briata sighed and moved over to a chair of deep red wood. It looked to be in good condition and would go well with a small desk. With some effort, she pulled it out and turned it right side up to get a better look.
The girl fingered the wood, a clear trail marking through the dust that had collected on it. This would go in her quarters. Her tiny quarters. All alone. Briata's throat tightened and she turned away from the chair to search for more furniture. She needed something to do, something to get her mind off of everything. It wasn't working though. Every time she tried to imagine something that would go in her quarters, she was reminded that she was no longer a Lady Warder. That in itself wasn't a problem. She didn't have to be a Lady Warder, or a Lady Holder. She didn't need title or prestige. No, it was merely a reminder that she was no longer Ishek's wife. She was no longer his friend. He had betrayed her and she was paying for it.
Her thoughts made the tears return. Briata tried to fight against them, but the tears eventually won. Soon she found herself sitting on the dusted chair, sobbing away like she had when she first found out about Ishek's infidelity.
"Excuse me," B'lamick said, his voice unsure as he found the source of the noise that had drawn him into the room. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"
"Oh...oh." Briata cut short her sob, tried to stifle it. Her hands flew to her eyes, hastily wiping away the moisture that had trickled down her cheek. "I'm fine. Fine, thank you."
B'lamick surpressed a quiet chuckle as he took in her blotchy face. "You don't look fine. Here." He took a few steps back to a stack of blue towels and took one, walking towards her until he was able to hand it to her.
For a moment, Briata's hands stayed in her lap. The one slowly rose to take the towel. It must have been put into storage recently for there was no trace of dust that Briata could see. She lifted it to her face and wiped it. "Thank you." She murmured, feeling rather foolish.
"No problem." he replied easily. He didn't like to see girls cry, it brought out the protective side of him too easily. "I'm B'lamick by the way."
"I'm Briata." With someone else around to see, it was easier to keep herself under control. Briata started to hand the young man the towel but realised it wasn't his for it had come from storage. She would take it. She needed towels anyway. "I was just...coming to find things for my quarters."
The name rang a bell, a new Lady Holder was named Briata, but he didn't think much of it as there must be quite a few young ladies with the same name. "It can be overwhelming at first, if you're new here. Would you like some help? I've got some free time and it's be horribly impolite of me to leave you to carry everything up yourself."
"Oh...well, that would be lovely, thank you." Briata was a lot calmer and she stood up from the chair. I haven't really picked out anything but this chair and...well, I guess now this towel."
B'lamick chuckled as she held up the tear stained towel, "Well, that's a start. Let's just get a pile going and see what else looks appealing."
"All right." Briata was grateful for his assistance. T'vanen would have helped, but he was busy and Briata had wanted to at least pick things out. She had expected he would have helped her take them back later, but since B'lamick was offering, she would accept. "I don't need much."
Now that she was feeling better, B'lamick wondered what exactly her story was. "You here by yourself then?"
"Well, I had really come to pick things out. I was going to come back with a friend later." Briata paused when she saw a small table and nightstand, both with a similar red wood. She ran a finger over the table, a trail clearing through the dust.
"I meant, here at the Weyr." He clarified, "Here to Stand for a hatching maybe?" He couldn't tell how old she was, she could still be young enough.
"Oh. No. I'm here because of...family issues." Though he was no longer her family, it was the closest Briata could get to telling the truth. She didn't really want to talk about it. "This is nice." She stated indicating the table in an attempt to change the subject.
He understood, alot of people came to the Weyr to start over, he wasn't going to push things. "It is, here, let me just move it over to our keeper pile."
"Thank you." Briata turned to get the night stand, but it was heavier than it looked. She wound up 'walking' it over behind B'lamick then looked around. "I guess a chair that's better for relaxing, or a small couch. A chair might be better as my quarters aren't very big."
B'lamick looked around, but didn't see anything at first that looked like it would match. "There's another store room down the hall that might have more selection. You don't have to pick everything from here."
"Oh. Well, I guess that's true enough." Briata took one more look around, but B'lamick had been right - nothing suited. "Would you mind showing me?"
He looked at the already established pile, "No problem, but do you want to carry this stuff up first? Wouldn't want somebody to pilfer from it while we were browsing elsewhere."
"That makes sense." At least her quarters weren't too far away - she had asked for a storage room close to her. She picked up the chair. It was heavy, but not too heavy for her to carry. "Thank you for helping me."
B'lamick tested picking up both the small table and nightstand, but decided he'd be likely to drop one or both and opted for the nightstand instead. "As I said, no problem. Just lead the way."
