K'reyel

K'reyel

Here's last month's progress reports." R'syl informed K'reyel, handing the
young weyrleader the mixed stack of hides and papers. "And this week's
paperwork."

"How are they doing?" asked K'reyel. M'galec had said one thing, but it was
always best to get it from the dragon's mouth.

"Well enough. This batch has been a little tamer than some, but they're
still weyrlings and all that entails." R'yl sighed, but offered a little
smile.

"Any of them outstanding? I'm looking for a few good blueriders to join my
wing." K'reyel was serious about that.

"Hmm." R'syl ran over the list of pairs in his mind. "There's two, maybe
three pairs that I could definitely recommend, and another one that's a bit
high strung but they seem to be settling down into an excellent pair -the
boy's holder born, and impressing blue came as a shock." he sighed.

"He was expecting bronze?" A lot of the holder boys seemed to, after all.
Most of the stories they would hear had a heroic bronzerider that saved the
day.

"I suspect so." R'syl admitted. "But he's hardly the only one who was
convinced they were bronzerider born. In any case, I think he'll probably be
a fine wingrider with a little more time. How many blues do you need?"

"Three," K'reyel told him.

"Three shouldn't be a problem." R'syl assured the Weyrleader. "Are there any
other colors you particularly need?"

"Greenriders, we always need that."

"Easy enough. Over a third of the last clutch was green, and I'd recommend
all but four of the ones old enough for the wings." R'syl, frowned to
himself. "Of course, There's really only two greens that have shown real
promise in this batch. The rest are pretty average."

"Are there many who will be under age?"

"No more than usual." R'syl shrugged. "They'll stay with the weyrling staff
where I can keep an eye on them. With a few exceptions, I think the rest can
go directly to the wings."

"Oh?" An eyebrow was raised at the word exceptions. "What have the
exceptions done?"

R'syl sighed. "One of the brownriders is a bully and keeps picking fights
and outright endangering his drillmates, and one of the greenriders and one
of the smaller blues just aren't ready for the wings yet -I'll probably send
them up a little later after they've had some more time to practice and get
some confidence in the air."

"I see. Might be an idea to keep that brownrider on messenger duty, away
from the others who aren't graduating so he can't pick on them." K'reyel
knew how he would have felt had he been told he wasn't going to the wings
like the rest of his class mates, and with one who was likely to pick on
others, well, best keep him separate.

"I intend to, until he gets the idea through his thick skull. Hopefully it
won't take too long. I don't really care for the idea of having him around
the younger weyrlings either with his attitude."

"Well once he's ready I'll have him in my wing. If my father can't lick him
into shape, nobody else will."

R'syl smiled. "Of course. But if you don't mind, I think I'll keep that bit
of information to myself for a while. No point in giving him ideas."

"No, but perhaps a warning that life in the wings is just as tough as
Weyrlinghood mightn't go amiss."

"We've been trying to drill that one into his head since he Impressed."
R'syl rolled his eyes. "He's stubborn, but he'll figure it out eventually. I
hope."

"I'm sure he will learn."

R'syl nodded. "I'm sure you're right. So blues and greens for the
weyrleader's wing. Do you know if the other wings are scouting any
particular colors?"

"Not off hand, you'd have speak to U'das and ask him."

"I'll be sure to do that then." R'syl agreed, standing. "Do you have any
other questions?"

"No, not for the moment."

"Then I'll let you get back to work."
