N'mor was sitting in the dining hall with his mother and sister, when
he spotted U'kaiah's familiar figure. Excusing his family members he
hurried to catch up with the older bronzerider. "Hey, U'kaiah!", he
called.
"N'mor," the Wingleader grinned. "What are you doing here? Visiting a
lady?"
"Visiting a family," N'mor replied and pointed towards the table were
his mother and sister sat.
The bronzerider nodded a greeting in their direction. "I'm sure they're
happy to see you. Any thoughts of transfering back to be closer to
them?"
"Naah, I kind like it in Dolphin Cove and they need all their riders.
I haven't seen you around there for a while. You used to be a regular
visitor," N'mor replied and remarked causually.
"Yes, well..." U'kaiah wasn't quite sure what to say that. "I... don't
have much reason to visit anymore."
"Huh?"
"Well, I was visiting a lady, and... Well, I'm not visiting her anymore.
We're both just moving on." With varying degrees of success.
"Speaking of ladies, I'm still not moving on anywhere," N'mor sighed.
"Oh?" U'kaiah asked curiously, somewhat relieved that they were moving
on to N'mor's lady troubles and away from his own. "Anyone in
particular?"
"Well, there's this greenrider I like about. She's bit older than me,
and although she's kind about it, I got the feeling she's just
laughing at me," N'mor told him and pulled his fingers thru his hair.
"Laughing at you? I doubt that," the older rider said encouraginly,
though who knew what women were really thinking when they gave them the
gentle brush off.
"Well, I just don't know what to do," N'mor sighed.
"What have you tried?"
"The dashing bronze-rider routine, " N'mor told, blushing at the memory.
"If it's a routine, then that's your problem right there. Women can
spot a man trying to be a stereotypical bronzerider from a dragonlength
away. You either are that kind of bronzerider, or you aren't." Luckily
for U'kaiah, he had never really had to pretend at being the cocky
bronzerider women looked for.
"I don't feel very dashing," N'mor admitted. "So, what should I do? Be
myself?"
"Oh shards no!" U'kaiah laughed. "Not at first at least. You have to
be the best parts of yourself, though. The parts that she seems to like
and respond to."
"And what would those be?" N'mor asked. He found this very confusing.
"Depends on the woman. You have to pay close attention to her, which is
the thing that will catch her interest the most." Every woman found
that flattering. "You have to watch how she reacts to things. If you
tell a joke and she smiles, she likes your funny side. If she only
gives you a polite smile, try talking about somthing a little deeper.
If she seems interested, you know she is looking for good conversation,
so you talk to her. And if you flirt and she flirts back, you know
you're in."
"All right," N'mor said, although he wasn't sure if he still
understood it. What should he be? A chameleon?
"It takes a little practice," U'kaiah admitted, noticing the young man's
uncertaintly. "You're basically showing her the part of yourself she
seems to find interesting, and then over time, reveal a little more of
yourself, and a little more, until she's hooked."
"Sounds like fishing, except without the worm," the youngster murmured.
"That is pretty much it." Though he thought better than to explain
about once the woman was hooked, the struggle wasn't over. Sometimes
you could put up a brave fight but in the end she manages to somehow
slip away and all you're left with is an empy hook. He had to let N'mor
figure that part of the process out for himself, like they all had to.
"Thank's, U'kaiah," N'mor said. "I better return to my mom's and
sister's company."
"Make sure and let me know how it goes the next time you come to
Dragonsfall." Hopefully N'mor would at least feel a little more
confident.
N'mor nodded and grinned. "See you around."
