Description: Tamah and K'reyel observe the approaching hurricane.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 3, day 7 of Turn 5
"Look at that cloud bank, sir. That's the storm," Tamah pointed at the
distant horizon. They stood at the dock, the wind was already strong
and it tried to tear off the raincloak from the Harbour master.
"It looks a strong one," commented the Weyrleader. He'd given orders for
those who could in the weyr to take shelter, and sent messengers to outlying
holds that dangerous weather was coming.
"Might even be a hurricane," Tamah said. "My missing fingers ache,
that's always sign of bad weather."
"Is it coming head on?"
"Not quite. If the wind's direction doesn't change, it will hit the
land east of us. It's still close enough to make our lives miserable.
If the wind changes direction, who knows?" The seacrafter replied with
eloquent shrug.
"At least I was able to designate an alternative rest day." The storm was
serious enough from early reports that he'd deemed it necessary to move the
rest day so that riders could be on duty as and when they were needed.
"Aye," Tamah agreed and turned to take a look of the port. His staff
was already preparing for the storm. Closing windows, sandbagging
doors, tying down anything loose, taking ships and boats to the
shelter.
"If your people need any help with that I can send some candidates over."
The offer was made in all seriousness, even though it looked like Tamah and
his people had things under control.
"A few extra hands would be helpful, thank's. This port is just too
open and unsheltered to the weather," Tamah said. It was one of his
pet-complains that he had repeated to various Weyrleaders over the
Turns. It was also something that you couldn't help with, unless you
wanted to relocate the whole port.
"I'll have them report to you as soon as possible."
"Thank you," Tamah said. A large wave crashed against the dock,
soaking them with salt water. "Eh, we better move in to more sheltered
place, it's definetly getting worse," he remarked, wiping the sea
water off from his face.
"Hopefully it won't be as bad as that which struck Dolphin Cove Weyr. There
was a lot of damage done there."
"I hope that too. Actually, river protects us some. It kind of
collects the storm's strenght and channels it," Tamah said.
"And is there a risk of flooding further inland?" It was a question, if
there was a storm surge, some of the smaller cotholds may need assistance.
"Might be, it's a possibility. The problem is that you can't tell
that beforehand."
"I'll have the wings on stand by in case they are needed."
"Let's hope they are not needed," Tamah remarked.
"And lets hope that the storm still has time to swing away from here."
