Description: Searchrider comes to Woodsmith hall and pick out Imarre.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 2, day 8 of Turn 5
"It's a Search! They doing a Search here!" The whole classroom full of
apprentices between ages of 15 to 18 heard the yell from outside and
there was no holding back on them. Their journeyman-teacher didn't
even try. He just sighed and watched how the room full of boys spilled
out. Imarre was among those boys. Like most of boys of his age, he had
dreamed of dragons (although not too seriously, he liked
woodsmithing).
The stampede came to a sudden halt when they reached the courtyard.
The awesome sight of two dragons stopped them dead. Most of them
had never seen dragon up close and didn't know what to do now.
Virla dismounted from her lifemate and patted the green before she
turned upon her heal and approached the throng of boys that had
gathered at the first word of her arrival. Her eyes darted about and
she smirked at the expression on at least a couple of faces. Search
was not the most exciting event to take place to the older Journeymen
and Masters. It probably didn't help that she was female either. The
dragonrider's smirk changed to a smile as she looked into the eager
faces gathered before her. Wenreth inched closer, slowly though to
keep from frightening anyone. she was just a green, but even a green
was enormous to hold and craft born. "Well, well, well, what a lovely
welcome. I gather you're all here in hopes of being Searched?"
There was affirmative yeah, from the group. Someone, perhaps one of
the older ones, yelled them to form a line. There was jostling and
pushing when the boys formed a rough line in the yard. Imarre found
himself in the middle. He never been in search before. Oh, there had
been searches in the hall, (although not often), but he had somehow
always managed to miss them. Once he had been sick and in bedrest,
second time he had been on field trip to the lumber camp.
Virla cast a glance back at the brownrider who had accompanied her.
She didn't think his assistance would be needed, but it was good to
have him there just in case. There were some unpleasant expressions
on some of the elder's faces. Would they be quiet if she had been
alone? Surely they wouldn't try anything, not with Wenreth, but who
knew? "All right, Wenny's going to come closer. Don't be frightened,
just let her get a good look at you - she won't hurt you."
Imarre felt a nervous flutter in his belly when he watched the dragon
draw closer.
The green lowered her head, one great eye studying the group. One
eyelid closed, turning the blue milky, then opened to reveal clarity.
}:That one.:{ Virla turned to her green as the dragon indicated
Imarre among the boys. }:He will do well.:{
The rider turned back and pointed straight at Imarre. "You, come here."
"Me?" Imarre squaked and stepped hesitantly few steps closer.
"Yes, you." Virla grinned at the young man's hesitation and the look
upon his face, disbelief, she was certain. "Wenny thinks you would be
a good candidate. Would you like to Stand?"
"Me? Of..of course I would like to. I would be dutybound to," Imarre
said and tried hard not to look too jubilant.
Virla pursed her lips but her eyes twinkled with her humour. She
turned back to her lifemate and after a moment of silence conversation
and picking out one of the resident girls who had simply come to watch
not to really be Searched, Virla pulled them both aside.
"I'll return for you in two days time. This will give you a chance to
gather your things and say goodbye." The greenrider looked between
the two. She had been afraid the girl would not be allowed, but her
father was amenable enough. "You'll have to bring only the essentials
as there won't be much room." The comment was more for the girl than
the boy.
Imarre nodded obediently. He was not sure how his father was going to
take the news. It was probably going to be one of their shouting
matches again. "I've heard you can still craft at the weyr?" He asked
bit hesitantly.
"Yes, you can." Virlan replied in a bright tone. That was often a
concern with crafters who were Searched. "That won't be a problem at
all."
"Good," Imarre said. He liked his craft and wasn't not ready to give
it up altogether.
