Date: month 2, day 10 of Turn 5

"Plumage!" Thanja called for her blue flit. "Plumage, come here!"

"Pesky critter," Eilomar scowled and tried to protect his meat roll from the blue firelizard. So, maybe eating and walking wasn't the best of the ideas, but one should not get harrassed by those unruly flitters.

"Plumage," called Thanja again. "Are, there you are," she said spotting him. "He hasn't been bothering you has he?"

"Yes, he has. He is after my lunch," Eilomar replied, still scowling.

"He gets hungry, but I thought I'd taught him to come and find me or Kanydrin rather than try and beg food from people. I'm sorry about this."

Eilomar grunted and glared suspiciously the firelizard, protecting his precious food against his chest.

"Come here," she told the flit, holding out an arm to him as she reached into a belt pouch with her other hand, pulling out some strips of dried meat. "I try to remember to bring something for him."

"As long as it's not my food," Eilomar said. As an overweight person, he was very possessive of his food.

Plumage sniffed around tyhe jerky for a moment or two, before decided to take it between his talons and nibble at it. In a way, his manner reminded her of one of her children. "He's like a small child sometimes."

Eilomar just grunted again. His expression softened up however, now that the flit wasn't interested in him anylonger.

"Perhaps you should look into getting one of your own, there are so many clutches close to the Weyr." Thanja had perhaps misread the expression on Eilomar's face.

"A pet? Me?" Eilomar sounded incredulous. "I never had a pet in my life!"

"Plumage has a little more use than a feline or a canine, he takes messages to my children," pointed out Thanja. "Your daughters live far away, don't they?"

"Yes, they do," Eilomar replied.

"Maybe a little one like this could take letters to them?"

"Hmh, it is worthy of consideration, but..." Eilomar scratched his thinning blond hair, "...why would one want to impress me?"

"Why not?" she countered. "All you need to do is let him or her know that you would love it, and feed it, and care for it."

"Well, the feeding part wouldn't be a problem," Eilomar said. Deep down he was unsure about the love-part...

"And nor would the rest after one has looked to you," Thanja told him.

"Would it really be that easy?" Eilomar wondered. Then he snorted and shook his head. "Naah, what a silliness. I don't have time for a pet."

"I thought so to, then, I just couldn't say no to this one."

Eilomar could only shrug at that.

"You should think about it at least," Thanja told him as she fished out another piece of meat for Plumage. "Don't discount the idea totally."

"Well, maybe," Eilomar hesitated. "But now I must go before I attract more hungry creatures," he said with a flash of rare self-irony.

"Enjoy the rest of your day."

"Thank you. You too, Hallsecond."
