It was the evening before restday and the harpers had some new tunes so many
riders were lingering to listen and have another drink or just socialize.
Having had an ale or two Z'brei was relaxed, but when the friends he had
been sitting with departed, he wasn't quite ready yet so he sat back down at
the nearest table. He recognized the bronzerider, he had been at his
impression, but they had not spoken much, "B'lamick right?" the bluerider
asked. "I'm Z'brei."
"Nice to meet you." B'lamick said as the two shook hands. "Your wingmates
all abandoned you too?"
"One of them is just way too old for twenty-five turns, actually said
something about it getting late. The other two decided they wanted to be
alone. I offered to go be alone with them," Z'brei gave a mischievous grin
and a shrug, "But apparently that isn't what they had in mind."
B'lamick chuckled at his explanation, he liked this fellow already. "Well,
I've nobody to sneak off to be alone with, so why don't we enjoy a few more
ales together before it really does get late."
"I'm most agreeable to that!" Z'brei said lifting his mug, "And who knows
maybe by that time somebody to sneak off with will present herself. So
where to you hale from B'lamick?"
"The Healer Hall originally, I Impressed about a turn ago.. How about you?"
He took him for a weyr born, either that or he Impressed young.
"I grew up in Coral Bay, my family has blood ties to the Lord Holder there,"
he rolled his eyes to let the other rider know exactly what he thought of
that. "I didn't exactly fit in," he chuckled. "My mother called me her
'wild child'. Always willing to try anything. I think everyone was a bit
relieved when I was searched. None more than me! I came here four turns
ago at sixteen and impressed Valotyth the first time that I stood," his
voice still held a bit of nostalgia. "I was made for Weyr life though! And
you? Was the adjustment hard?"
B'lamick shook his head, thinking it over for a moment. "No, not really.
Being from the Hall I was used to alot of people coming and going. I was
never the shy type really."
"Neither was I. It's a shame really, for those that can't enjoy all the
Weyr has to offer," Z'brei said with a shake of his head, "But each to
their own, I'm not one to judge!"
"You said you came from Coral Bay," B'lamick said as he took a sip of his
ale, "Were you apprenticed anywhere?"
"No, my father hoped to get me into the main Hold as an assistant to one of
the understewards. Did I mention I was really, really happy to be
searched?" Z'brei laughed. "I love my family dearly, but I definitely move
to a different drum beat than the rest. Was your family pleased to see you
impress?"
B'lamick nodded, remembering how happy everyone had been for him at the
Healer Hall when he'd been leaving to Stand. "My father, yes. A bit
disappointed I wasn't going to be healing along side him, but I think he
figures I'll be going into dragonhealing now. And that's an assumption he
can continue to have if it makes him happy."
Z'brei chuckled as he took another swallow of his ale. "So that isn't your
plan then?"
B'lamick grinned and shook his head. "No. I liked healing well enough, but
it was more of a what was expected of me thing than what I'd really dreamed
of doing. Dragonriding and fighting Thread is much more exciting."
"That it is! So, you said you have nobody to sneak off with this fine
evening. You've not found someone special here at the Weyr in your time
here, then?"
The bronzerider took a long swig of his ale before answering, "Found
someone special? Yes, most definitely. But unfortunately I'm not that kind
of special to her."
"_That_ kind of special? But she finds you _some_ kind of special at
least?"
"Aye" B'lamick admitted mournfully, "The worst kind of special, the _friend_
kind."
"That isn't so bad really. Good friends can become the best lovers if what
you're looking for is a relationship and not just a roll in the sheets.
What you need is a way to get her to see you as a _man_ not just a friend."
B'lamick laughed, if only it was that easy. "This coming from a man who is
_also_ alone tonight."
"Hmmm. Good point. I'm between special interests right now, myself.
Always on the lookout for another of course," Z'brei said with a wink as he
appreciatively watched a pretty brunette cross the room. He tended to
prefer women, though he was not opposed to male company either on occasion.
"Well, maybe it's time I get on the lookout too." B'lamick sighed. Tey
wasn't going to see him as anything other than a friend, so why wait around
making himself more miserable.
"It never hurts to look, or even sample a little. Given time, who knows
maybe your _friend_ will start to see you a little differently."
B'lamick snorted and finished off his ale. If he thought Tey would ever
change her feelings for him, he'd wait for her; but he didn't think she
would.... not Tey.
