"That looked good," called the Weyrleader as he watched the Torrent Wing
drill break up, the wingriders slowly drifting off.
"Thank you, Weyrleader," U'das replied and pulled the helmet off his
head, wiping sweat from his scalp.
"I liked the way you used the youngsters out there, was that a new idea?"
"No, I actually borrowed it from Far Island weyr. I visisted there not
long ago," U'das replied with a grin.
"They had much chance to practice it here?"
"According to my son U'sel, it's something the developed when they
were in situation where most of the wing's riders have been rider's
less than a turn. Lot's of youngsters and not too many experienced
riders."
"Have you asked any of the younger riders what they think?" The Weyrleader
was curious.
"Not yet," U'das said, "this is the first time we tried it."
"Then maybe we should ask them."
U'das just nodded.
K'reyel flagged down one of the younger bronzeriders. "B'lamick, a word if
you please."
"Hey K'reyel," B'lamick greeted him lightly as he walked over to meet the
two, "You recruiting for another game of Sandball?"
"Maybe later bronzerider," replied the Weyrleader as he gestured to U'das'
presence. "Just wanted to ask you about this last drill you did."
B'lamick looked briefly to U'das then back to K'reyel. "The Far
Island one? It's interesting. And changing up is good, but it's a
bit simple. I just don't know if it would be much use against Thread.
It's good for communication practice though."
"It is meant to ingrain inexperienced riders into a working unit,"
U'das commented with a slight shrug.
"It did seem that way," said K'reyel.
The youngest bronzerider nodded in agreement, "It does, don't get me
wrong, I think it's a good excercise, just not something I'd want to
replace one of our exsisting formations with."
"Our current formation works well, I don't see any need of change it.
But drills are different and bit of change now and then keeps you
wake," U'das said teasingly.
"Exactly," seconded K'reyel.
"Speaking of change," B'lamick said with a sly grin. "I was chatting up
one of your wingmen the other day, and we had the idea that we should swap
out. As in several riders not just us, but swap around to the different
wings for a few days now and then. We just get so used to our own wings and
ways, it seems odd when we get a new wingman or a fill in. Maybe it
wouldn't if we were used to flying with everyone."
"It's something we should talk about at a later date perhaps." suggested
K'reyel. The idea had merit, but he wasn't about to debate it in public, and
not with a very junior bronzerider.
"Yes," U'das nodded, "Let's keep that idea in our mind. It's worth of
concideration," He felt good when even the younger riders brought
forward their ideas and he liked to encourage them to do so.
"Thank you for your thoughts though," K'reyel told B'lamick. "Keep that kind
of thing coming."
B'lamick briefly though that the older men were placating him; but why would
they ask his opinion if they didn't want to hear it? "Sure thing."
"Remember the ideas are good," K'reyel told him. "Ideas like that can
indicate a future leader."
"Well, I'll keep tossing out the ideas," B'lamick replied, brushing off the
leader comment, "But I'll just focus on surviving my first year in the
Wings, and leave the leadership to both of you."
