"My, don't you look beautiful tonight." B'lamick remarked as he came up next to Tey. He'd worn his best for Turn's End, and so apparently had she.
"Thank you." Tey turned on the spot, making the full skirt on her best dress twirl out in a circle and then swish to a stop against her legs. "It's pretty, isn't it?" she asked, looking up from smoothing the thin but heavy fabric with her hand.
She would have looked pretty in a sack, but he dare not give her anymore compliments. "You dressed up for someone special?" He hoped not.
"I dress up because I love dresses," Tey said. "And I love looking my best." She leaned forward, her dark eyes alight with amusement and excitement. "It's not easy to look beautiful when you're blessed with an abundance of freckles -" she patted her cheek which was just as covered with the things as the rest of her, "But I do my very best despite that."
"Your freckles do you no disservice." He had to be careful or he'd end up giving her more complements. "I think it's the perpetual flight suit tan we all have that you have to watch out for."
"Where?" she demanded, looking down at the skin exposed by the lower than usual neckline of the dress.
B'lamick laughed as he briefly traced the darker line of freckles across both her cheeks. "Hey, before you go showing off that dress to anyone else I've got a little present for you."
"Oh?" Tey was quite pleased, though rather regretful that she didn't have anything for him. As it was, with a family the size of hers, her marks barely stretched to gifts for them, let alone friends. She looked hopefully at the bronzerider as well as trying to take a peek at her cheeks determined to check whether she did have a tan line under where her goggles sat. It was entirely possible, she supposed, though she'd never noticed it.
He reached into his pocket, suddenly wishing he'd wrapped it or added a ribbon or something, and held out his hand to show off the little silver ring he'd picked up at that gather awhile back. "It's not much..."
"Oh, B'lamick! It's pretty. What a wonderful friend you are," she told him as she took the ring and leaned forward to kiss his cheek. "Nobody's ever given me jewelery before."
B'lamick moved, he didn't know why, but he turned his head slightly so that their lips brushed each other instead of just his cheek. He immediately looked down and took a step back, embarrassed and worried how she'd react. "Sorry."
"What for?" Tey laughed. "Are you getting early for your Turns End kisses?"
"I just, tripped or something. I didn't mean to." He stammered out. It was lame and didn't make sense, but if she didn't think anything of it, he had to try and cover.
"Didn't mean to? Aww, B'lamick, that's not much of a compliment." She looked down at her hand, now boasting the silver ring. "Thank your for my present. I'm sorry I didn't get you anything."
B'lamick shrugged like she shouldn't mention it, but secretly he was ecstatic they were back on safer ground. It hurt that his lips hadn't had the same affect hers had on him, but he'd known all along that she didn't feel anything but friendship for him. "No need. I just saw it at a gather a few months back and thought you'd like it."
"You did more than _think_," Tey pointed out. "Thinking's easy enough. You _did_ something about your thoughts, as well and I'm flattered."
"Well, I'm glad you like it." He said with a outward smile. Inside though, he was anything but happy. He needed to get over this crush he had, right now. It just hurt too much. "Want to take a turn or two on the dance floor?"
"I'd love that. And then we can have something to eat. I know you - you're always hungry."
B'lamick grinned despite himself. She _did_ know him, and it sounded like she planned on sticking with him for awhile at least, he'd take whatever time she gave him. "Sounds like a plan," he agreed, sticking his elbow out for her to take.
Tey rested her hand on his forearm and smiled at him. He was the sweetest person she knew, and a wonderful friend. He didn't seem to see her as anything more, which she occasionally thought was a pity, but that was his choice and she wasn't going to change those glows when they were shining just fine.
