K'reyel

K'reyel

It might have been the middle of the night, but the Weyrleader couldn't
sleep. He tried rolling over, followed by kicking the covers off himself,
but it was no good. It was just one of those nights when that comfortable
feeling of drowsiness that precedes sleep just wouldn't come.

Not so for his weyrmate, she lay fast asleep on this night. So as not to
disturb her, K'reyel quietly slipped out of their bed, lifting the curtain
that separated their sleeping area from their living room. A faint noise
disturbed him, that of his baby son making a snuffling noise in his slumber.

"I wonder what you are thinking about?" K'reyel asked him softly after
walking over to look down on the crib in which the child lay. One tiny fist
was raised above his head, and Mayel moved it slightly in his dream. "Are
you trying to make a point?" continued K'reyel to the sleeping child.

"I wonder what you'll be like when you get older. Who will you take after?
Will you be a rider like me, or a choose a craft to follow like your mother?
What ever you do know that we will be with you every step of your journey
through life."

"It won't always be easy, I know that know. There will be times when you
get frustrated, but also times when you experience great joy and happiness.
I know that, and one of the greatest joys you will find is when you find
someone to love, and that someone loves you back just as much in return. It
can happen when you least expect it to, but when it does happen you will
know that person is the one for you. That was what I knew about your
mother."

"She loves you too, sometimes, when you grow up a bit, she'll shout at you;
tell you you've been naughty or done something wrong. It'll seem like she
doesn't love you then, but believe me, she'll still love you just as much."

K'reyel paused in his monologue, for a moment as Mayel kicked out at the
sheet covering him. "You can ask your older sisters about that, they'll
tell you that there has been any number of times that I've told them off,
and that it seemed to be for little things, but I've always made a point of
telling them how much I love them and you. You are all special to me."

"If you do choose to stand as a candidate once you are of age, we wouldn't
stop you. You could impress any colour, green, blue, brown or bronze and
we'd love you just as much. Impression of any colour of dragon doesn't
change who you are, it just helps you become more you. Your dragon is the
other half of you and you feel somehow complete. I can't describe it, maybe
one day you'll experience it and understand."

"Or if you choose to take up a craft, there are lots to choose from. Don't
think you have to try my craft, or be a Harper like your mother unless you
really want to or have a talent for it. Remember you have an Uncle who
chose to be a Smith, and another a Miner. You can choose anything on Pern
you want, be whoever you want and nobody will stop you if that's what is in
your heart."

Then the Weyrleader yawned. perhaps it was time to try and sleep after all.
"Good night my son," he whispered, dropping a gentle kiss on the child's
forehead. With those words, he went back to his bed.
