Staying

Writers: Cali, Jane
Date Posted: 31st January 2009

Characters: Tey, B'lamick
Description: Tey admits to B'lamick that she's decided not to move to Dolphin Cove Weyr.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 26 of Turn 4

"Hey Tey." B'lamick greeted the girl when she opened the door to her Weyr.

"Hello. I wondered if you'd turn up," Tey said, taking for granted that
he would. They had become good friends since their first meetings as
Candidates together, though they had Impressed from different clutches
so unavoidably seen less of each other during their respective
weyrlinghoods. Now they were both full riders, in the same Wing, and
they were probably the other's most constant companion. "Come in. It's
a mess," she warned, and for once she was right.

That was an odd enough statement that he warily stepped into the weyr.
He saw stacks of things on the floor and piles of clothes on the bed.
"You're going to Dolphin Cove then." It was a defeated, deflated tone
in his voice, but he couldn't hide it.

"Mmm? B'lamick, you have a real thing about me leaving, don't you?" Tey
said in exasperation. "Well, you're wrong. I'm sorting things out.
Turn Over? Remember? The perfect time to sort out the clutter from the
necessities and get everything clean and tidy for the new Turn."

"Oh!" Surprise and relief flooded him, and he thanked the stars for her
peculiar little cleaning compulsions. "So you're staying then, right?
At River Bluff?" Surely she was, or else what was the point to all the
cleaning? Still, he had to hear her say it.

"Hard to find another place as attractive as Dolphin Cove that is asking
for riders ... So, yes. I'm staying. Which is lucky because I seem to
have a lot to do here," she said, eyeing the piles of possession spread
across the very small room.

He felt a great weight lift off his chest, and he wondered how long it
had been there. "Want some help?"

Tey made a show of looking horrified. "From _you_?"

"Hey!" he gave her a playful shove, "I can make piles with the best of
them. It's putting things _away_ that I have a problem with."

"Your piles are _heaps,_" the greenrider pointed out. "Have a look at
my piles. They are all in order. And neat. Do you really think you
can suppress your natural instincts and 'pile' like that?"

"Probably not." He admitted with a grin. "How about I just find a
empty spot on the floor and try not to touch anything while you do your
_organizing_." He made it sound almost like a dirty word.

She ignored his tone and nodded. "Good solution. I could do with some
company." She carefully removed the three piles balancing on the deep
armchair and set them down in front of the bed. "There. Have a seat."

He did as he was told and watched her move about the small weyr. "So...
are you going to be finished soon?"

"Not for a while," Tey said as she emptied another of the small drawers
under her clothes press. Without seeming to consider the items she put
then on a variety of piles and then went back to the next drawer. "It's
best to do it all at once. Procrastinating is just as bad as untidiness."

B'lamick accepted this and was quiet for another few moments before
asking, "Do you have any snacks?"

"No, I don't keep food in my room. It's an invitation for tunnelsnakes."

"And guests," he pointed out after flicking his tongue out at her. "How
do you ever plan on keeping your friends happy without something to fill
their stomachs?"

"My friends love me for myself," she informed him with a smile, "not
because I fill their tummies like their mothers did."

She was right, he would even if she never offered him anything but her
tart tongue. "They'd love you more if they weren't hungry. Then they
could focus on you and your fascinating personality."

"And my exceptional ability to tidy."

"And your keen fashion sense," he added, admiring her figure despite
telling himself previously that he would stop doing so.

"You like dresses?" Tey said, pausing in her sorting to smile across at
him. Many of the female dragonriders were so used to wearing trousers
during their duty times that they seldom wore anything else.

B'lamick chuckled, "I don't think they flatter my figure much, but on
you? Of course."

She smiled at the young bronzerider, warmed by the comment and by the
fact that he noticed what she wore. "You're a great friend, B'lamick.
Remind me to be nicer to you ... maybe even having some food in here for
tunnelsnakes and hungry young men."

"Heard and witnessed." B'lamick sang, fully intending to make her keep
her promise.
