Nimroy sat alone in his quarters; chest tight and eyes burning with unshed
tears, feeling as if the walls of the Hold were crushing him. Of course he
had known this was coming and he had thought himself well prepared, but
somehow he found that he was not. His father was dead.
Everything washed over him at once. Guilt over years of arguing and
disagreement. Shame due to angry words that should not have been uttered.
Gratitude for the tentative understanding that he and Benaroy had come to
these past months. Profound sadness and loss as his mind replayed memories.
His earliest was sitting in his father's lap, listening to a story. The man
had had little time and many children so such was truly a special moment for
the young boy. Nimroy remembered his first runner and how the lecture on
responsibility prior to being allowed to actually ride had seemed eternal.
How proud he was when his father praised him and how ashamed he felt when
the man had learned of any mischief. Still, most of the early childhood
memories were good.
It wasn't until he was eleven or twelve turns that he and Benaroy seemed to
begin to oppose one another. His turns as a teen, those had been difficult
and the wall between them was well and truly forged. It had only just begun
to come down this last turn. Nimroy shook his head at his own stubbornness,
hoping he would not suffer the same difficulties with his own son. Vowing
that he would not.
Of course he would not be preparing his own son for the task of running a
Hold at the cost of his own dreams. Running a Hold. Faranth! He hoped his
father had left something somewhere that declared an heir. If he hadn't,
Nimroy wasn't sure he wanted to stick around for the mayhem that would
ensue.
He supposed that either Royan or Benaran would be named. Royan was the
eldest and passionately dedicated to the Hold above all else. Still for
administration and management few could best Benaran. Perhaps Royah had a
chance, as he had been father's personal assistant for some time. Nimroy
smiled, somehow he could not picture his jokester of a brother as Lord
Holder, but perhaps father had seen a different side to him.
He could not really imagine any of the others being named. Milroy treated
life as a game. Benamil preferred to be out of the Hold, away from the
noise and people. Imaroy was too young. Benil too, although there had been
Lord Holders that young before, but it seemed unlikely.
Of course Zathris was a possibility as well. Not only was he Benani's
husband, but he was also the son of a Lord Holder. His own father had
nearly declared him heir. He had done well here and proved himself able.
Still, it was hard to imagine Benaroy choosing him above one of his own
sons.
Nimroy realized he had discounted himself out of hand. Though a son, he
doubted his father had ever given serious consideration to him as an heir.
Since he was old enough to apprentice, he had wanted nothing more than to
get out of the Hold. No Nimroy was not suited to the position of Lord
Holder, though he was confident that he could be of assistance to whomever
was chosen. He certainly owed that to his father. Yes the best way to
honor Lord Benaroy would be to help see that Amber Hills thrived under the
new leadership, regardless of who was the new Lord Holder.
