First class

Writers: Jane, Paula
Date Posted: 15th December 2008

Characters: Oresthon, Kimbel
Description: Oresthon joins Kimbel's class.
Location: Smith Hall (NPC)
Date: month 13, day 1 of Turn 4
Notes: Follows "Admitted in"

His first ever apprentice class, Oresthon thought, when he looked
around the class room from the door opening. He felt lost, lonely and
totally out of his place. This was not the place he wanted to be.

"Come in!" Kimbel called. He looked around the room, eying the other
apprentices with an expression that warned them to carry on working
before heading to the desk at the front of the sprawling room and
waving the youngster toward him. "Oresthon, isn't it?"

"Yes, sir. You're Kimbel? I'm supposed to join your class." Oresthon
replied. He was tall, thin boy with sand brown hair.

"Most of the new boys seem to end up in my class," Kimbel admitted.
"Yes, I'm Kimbel. Has anybody talked to you about what you've done,
craft-wise, before coming here?"

Oresthon shook his head. He had pretty much given the schedules and
direction where to find the classroom.

"All right. Have you done any work with smiths? Family members, or
around your home?"

"Dad's a smith, so is grand-dad. They got me dragged into smithy from
time to time," Oresthon replied.

"Great." It didn't seem like the boy was keen to expand on what he
had done with his father and grandfather, but that could just be
modesty. "Did you do any work with them? Or just watch?"

"Mostly watched. I'm not very strong," Oresthon said.

"Boys become strong by doing, but if you've only watched I think I can
safely put you in the new apprentice work stream without boring you
too much. You might enjoy learning a little more about what your
father and grandfather were doing, and why."

"All right, sir," Oresthon said like a good, dutiful boy. But inside
he was rebelling. This was not the right hall.

"All right. I'll show you to your desk in a moment, then take you
around and show you the work bench you'll share with one other, and
give you a general tour of the apprentice workshops. Are you living
in the dormitories?"

"Yes, I am," Oresthon replied.

"Is there anyone in particular you've met that you would like to show
you around?" the journeyman suggested, knowing that an apprentice-eye
view of the world would probably be more entertaining to the
youngster.

"I haven't got a chance to met many people yet," Oresthon replied with
a shake of his head.

"Then it might have to be me. No problem. Come over here, then.
This will be your desk while you're in this class. And this class
will cover the basics of smithcraft; mainly hand-tool use. It's not
very exciting but every smith needs these skills to build on." Kimbel
led the young man to the semi-circle of desks and patted one. "Room
here for your texts and writing gear. Storage down there for small
projects and drawings. You'll need to keep it tidy or you'll have
extra chores."

Oresthon just nodded to indicate he was listening.

"You'll come here every morning after breakfast and you'll do lessons
and study. In the afternoons you'll work on your first project.
Completing each project and each course of study allows you to
progress to the next lot of work. Does that make sense?"

"Yes, it does," Oresthon said. He liked less and less of the outlook
of his future.

"Good," Kimbel said. "I'm sure you'll look back on your
apprenticeship when you're a journeyman or master smith and consider
it a great time in your life."
