When You Are Ready

Writers: Cali, Emma
Date Posted: 18th November 2008

Characters: B'lamick, M'van
Description: B'lamick asks the Dragonhealer about why Latarth doesn't chase.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 1 of Turn 4

B'lamick finished the last of his greens and looked up from the table. All
his wingmates had left the table except for M'van, and that gave him an
opportunity he'd be avoiding. He scooted down so he was across from the
bluerider, "Hey M'van, can you put your dragonhealer hat on for a bit."

"Sure, not a problem." The bluerider looked over the young bronzerider.
"Your Latarth has a problem?"

"Well, I'm not sure, I hope not." it was a topic he'd learned not to be
embarrassed about, but it still wasn't an easy thing to discuss. "He's not
chasing, at least not very often, and I'm kind of worried about it."

"I see." M'van studied the youngster more closely. "Do you want him to chase more often?"

"No," he answered honestly. "But he's only chased three times and he's
almost a turn old. I know it's normal for a bronze not to _catch_ a green
very often, but most dragons at least _chase_ every couple sevendays if not
more."

M'van couldn't help wondering something. "You're holdbred aren't you?"
Maybe this train of thought might lead him somewhere or not.

B'lamick was startled by the change of topic, "Craftbred actually, Healer
Hall. Why?"

That did explain something, or at least it did to the weyrbred bluerider,
sometimes the youngsters had a bit of a hard time adjusting to the facts of
life where dragons were involved. "You'd have been taught that things are
very different in the way of relationships between men and women at a Weyr
while you were a candidate? Yes?" He didn't wait for an acknowledgment, but continued. "Sometimes it takes longer for a new rider to adjust to that, and the dragons know that."

"You mean it's _my_ fault he's not chasing?" he didn't understand, he
wasn't afraid of the flights. Nervous sure, and slightly relieved when
another dragon caught the green, but not afraid.

"Sometimes it happens that a rider can inhibit their dragon without meaning
too if they aren't ready for what flights mean, and who you might end up
with," M'van said gently.

B'lamick frowned as what he was saying started making sense. "Is it
hurting him?"

"It's more likely to be confusing him, but remember that what he does, he
does for you. He knows that you aren't ready, and when you are he will be
too. Also, you have to remember that like people dragons themselves are
ready when they are ready."

"Is that why he chased those three times?" He tried to think if anything
was special about those times, but the riders had all been unknown to him
and he wasn't doing anything special when he'd been called... "Will it hurt
him to stay this way? I mean, if I _don't_ go bed hopping with random people..."

"When you are ready, he will be ready is all I can say. If you have
concerns though, you might want to talk to a mind healer," suggested M'van.

The bronzerider scoffed at his wingmate. "Oh come on M'van! I don't need a mindhealer. If it's not hurting him then I'm not going to worry about it. I just wanted to make sure he was okay."

"Well if you have any other worries in the future about him come and speak
to me."

B'lamick gave him a mock salute, "Okay. You can take off that dragonhealer
hat now. I'm done worrying like an old auntie."

"It'll happen for the pair of you in your own sweet time." M'van grinned.
"Now why don't you go find that pretty girl I've seen you talking to."

He gave a confused smile, he'd talked to plenty of pretty girls, but he
didn't know who M'van was referring to in particular. Either way, he didn't think he'd be taking M'van's hint to find some girl. If Latarth wasn't hurt by it, then he wasn't going to waste his time on it. "I'll see you later M'van."

"Likely you will."
